    Tell me the news of the caravan that departed.

    Did it cross the mountain pass, or head toward the bān trees?

    Our beloved ones, if someday your dwellings grow distant

    From us, you still remain dwellers in the heart.

    When, after your departure, we are urged to forget

    By our own souls, our longings rise to forbid us.

    دَانُوا مُحِبَّهُمُ مِثْلَ الَّذِي دَانَا

    In God's keeping are beloved ones of ours who have departed;

    They treated their lover just as he treated them.

    And if we complain to them of what we endure,

    They lament being far from us just as we lament.

    O breeze from the direction of their land,

    Trail your hems and sleeves over the fragrance.

    And convey greetings to the one I do not name,

    Though I sometimes refer to him under the name Hind.

    And ask him: where are the pledges made between us?

    As though what once came from him had never been.

    فَلاَ أَرَى عَنْكَ طُولَ الدَّهْرِ سُلْوَانَا

    And tell him: You are my soul, O you who torment it;

    So I see no forgetting you for all eternity.

    My tears have become a sea in the sockets that hold them,

    And the eyelids amid it have become ships.

    And never has, O my soul's hope and desire,

    The pupil of my eye seen anyone since you vanished.

    فَصَارَ يُقْنِعُ قَلْبِي ذِكْرَكَ أَلاَنَا

    Once, union with you did not satisfy me;

    Yet now remembering you satisfies my heart.

    O you who listen to the reproachers' lies,

    By God, do not listen to falsehood and slander.
