And a woman asking about al-Hasan ibn Yahya,
With tears having wounded the corners of her eyes,
تَقولُshe says ترحّلhas departed المِفضالُthe bountiful one عنّاfrom us
وضِعْناand we have been lost بعْدَهُafter him فمتَىso when الرّجوعُthe return
Says, “The bountiful one has departed from us;
And we are lost in his absence—so when will he return?
وكانَand he was الشّمْسَthe sun فارَقَناhas left us سَناهُhis radiance

He was the sun; his radiance has left us,
So the familiar haunts and dwellings grew dark.

May God watch over him, the best of guardians,
Through whom calamities are held back, so they bring no terror.”

بِشارَتُكyour reward for good news الصّواهِلُthe neighing steeds والنّجوعُand the nomadic encampments
So I said, “It is as though he were already arriving”; she replied,
“Your reward for this news: neighing steeds and nomadic encampments!”
فقُلْتُso I said لعلّهاperhaps she انْفَرَدَتْwas alone بهَذاin this
فَقالَthen said بقَوْلِهاwith her words الحَيُّthe tribe الجَميعُthe whole
So I said, “Perhaps she alone feels this way,”
Then the whole tribe echoed her words.

So there was a prayer that rose, and a whispered plea,
The All-Hearing, its Answerer, accepted it.

And a decree accorded with the words she uttered,
Decreeing that entreaties do not go to waste.
