هوِّنْease علىfor النّفْسِthe soul النّفيسَةِprecious أمْرَهاits plight
هوِّنْ على النّفْسِ النّفيسَةِ أمْرَها
وإذاand if سلِمْتَyou are safe فلاthen do not تُرَعْbe alarmed لفَقيدِover one departed
وإذا سلِمْتَ فلا تُرَعْ لفَقيدِ
Ease the precious soul's plight.
Make life's burden light upon your precious soul
And if you are safe, do not be alarmed over one departed.
And if you're spared, then do not grieve for those now lost
لمْdid not يأتِbring صرْفُthe vicissitudes of الدّهْرِtime بِدْعاًsomething unprecedented مُحْدَثاًnewly created
لمْ يأتِ صرْفُ الدّهْرِ بِدْعاً مُحْدَثاً
كمْhow many منْof يَزيدٍYazid قدhas مضىpassed away ويَزيدِand Yazid
كمْ منْ يَزيدٍ قد مضى ويَزيدِ
Time's vicissitudes have brought nothing new or unprecedented.
Fate's vicissitudes have brought no unprecedented thing
How many a Yazid has passed away—and another Yazid!
Many a Yazid has passed away and many a Yazid still remains
