لِلَّهِto God دَرَّكَyour excellence مِنْas a أَخٍbrother
لِلَّهِ دَرَّكَ مِنْ أَخٍ
جَمِّabundant in الْفَوَاضِلِfavors وَالْفَضَائِلْand virtues
جَمِّ الْفَوَاضِلِ وَالْفَضَائِلْ
God bless you—what a brother you are,
For God's sake, how precious you are, O brother
abounding in favors and virtues.
Embodying all virtues and merits
رَعْيُtending الرَّسَائِلِletters شَأْنُهُhis concern
رَعْيُ الرَّسَائِلِ شَأْنُهُ
فِيin الْبُعْدِseparation أَوْor رَعْيُtending الوَسَائِلْbonds
فِي الْبُعْدِ أَوْ رَعْيُ الوَسَائِلْ
His way is to attend to letters,
Conveying messages is his purpose
from afar, or to cherish bonds.
Whether from afar or directly
مَاwhatever شِئْتَyou wish مِنْof خُلُقٍcharacter وَمِنْand of
مَا شِئْتَ مِنْ خُلُقٍ وَمِنْ
خَلْقٍform وَمِنْand of بَأْسٍvalor وَنَائِلْand bounty
خَلْقٍ وَمِنْ بَأْسٍ وَنَائِلْ
Whatever you wish in character and in
Whatever you wish for of manners and nature
form, and in valor and bounty.
Of valor and attainments
شِيَمٌtraits إذَاwhen مَاemphatic particle شِمْتَyou glimpse بَاlightning-cloud (first part)
شِيَمٌ إذَا مَا شِمْتَ بَا
رِقُlightning-cloud (completion) عَهْدِهَاtheir pledge بالْعِهْدِwith rain سَائِلْflowing
رِقُ عَهْدِهَا بالْعِهْدِ سَائِلْ
Traits—when you glimpse the lightning-cloud
A mark of honor when you sense its
of their pledge, it pours down rain.
Fragrance and the pact renews its solicitation
وَشَمَائِلٌand qualities مِثْلُlike الشَّمَاthe north wind (first part)
وَشَمَائِلٌ مِثْلُ الشَّمَا
لِnorth wind (completion) سَرَتْdrifted بأَنْفَاسِwith the breaths الْخَمَائِلْleafy groves
لِ سَرَتْ بأَنْفَاسِ الْخَمَائِلْ
And qualities like the north
And qualities like the north
wind, drifting with the breaths of leafy groves.
Wind that blew with the breaths of determination
إمَّاif جَنَحْتَyou incline لِوُدِّهِtoward his love الضَّاradiant (first part)
إمَّا جَنَحْتَ لِوُدِّهِ الضَّا
حِيradiant (completion) فَدَوْحُthen the spreading trees الْعَهْدِfidelity مَائِلinclining
حِي فَدَوْحُ الْعَهْدِ مَائِل
If you incline toward his radiant love,
Whether you inclined to his overflowing love
the spreading trees of fidelity incline toward you.
The pact sways from its straight path
صَافٍclear إذَاwhen كَدِرَturns murky الصَّفِيُّthe close friend
صَافٍ إذَا كَدِرَ الصَّفِيُّ
وَافٍgiving full measure إذَاwhen بَخِسَgives short measure الْمُكَائِلْthe measurer
وَافٍ إذَا بَخِسَ الْمُكَائِلْ
Clear when the close friend turns murky,
Pure when the sincere one became turbid
giving full measure when the measurer gives short.
Loyal when the swindler shortchanged
وَجَلاَand he cleared away صَدَىrust هَمِّيmy sorrow وَأَدْand dark steed (first part)
وَجَلاَ صَدَى هَمِّي وَأَدْ
هَمَهُits dark steed (completion) بَشَأْوِalong the course of النَّفْسِthe soul جَائِلْroaming
هَمَهُ بَشَأْوِ النَّفْسِ جَائِلْ
And he cleared my sorrow's rust, while its dark
The echo of my anxiety roared
steed roamed the soul's course.
And his worries with the soul's discontent roared
وَأَفَادَنِيand enriched me زَمَنِيmy time بِهِthrough him
وَأَفَادَنِي زَمَنِي بِهِ
فَحلَوْتُso I gained مِنْfrom زَمَنِيmy time بِطَائِلْwith something worthwhile
فَحلَوْتُ مِنْ زَمَنِي بِطَائِلْ
And my time enriched me through him,
He made my time fruitful through him
so I gained something worthwhile from my time.
So I delighted in my time without futility
