We made our two young she-camels kneel, and I sent my companion

into danger, now hiding, now moving on.

Then, when he reached her, he said, “Alas for you! Grant relief to

one sick with love of you and burning longing.”

She said, “By God's sanctity, even if his soul

were flowing onto the palm from yearning for me,

I would [not] help him—may my hand be paralyzed if I helped him

in any way; and I have been told where his affections turn.”

And when I discerned in you a leaning toward the enemies

against me, though no beloved other than you had appeared,

I turned away as the arrow-struck beast did, while

the span of days stretched over it, though it lay slain.

And I consoled a noble soul over Nawar,

despite the anguish and burning longing within it.

It wept its grief to the utmost, and turned back,

knowing that estrangement from Nawar would last long.

When words are not accepted and their reply is sent back

to a lover, he does not know how to speak.

My two friends, the words were not accepted, and their reply was sent back.

And turn, both of you, to the valley of the foothill, where she turns.

For if you two come to her, you will be watered

by a Yemeni raincloud, moisture-laden in its breeze, pouring rain.

And say to her, both of you: “What do you think of a lover

whose evening slumbers are followed by wailing?”
