Swords healed the soul, in the right hands of young men
The souls were healed by the swords of steadfast youth
Of al-Fizr; their hard-steel blades ranged among ʿUqayl.
Who strode valiantly through Ukayl's land

Tried by time, with them they have often
Tested by days, they multiplied strikes upon
Clashed with foes, so their foreparts are notched.
The enemies - their chests arebut gaping wounds

Like the tracks of ants upon their backs
As if the march of ants were over their bodies
Is their mottling, when unstained with blood.
When their leopard-skins are not dyed by blood

They come to them white, and come away from them
They turn them white then emerge from them
Like date-palm clusters whose months have ripened them.
Like the full clusters of palm trees ripened through months

In my paternal cousins' hands; their faces are like
At the hands of my cousin's sons, their faces like
Lamps whose light was kindled for all creation.
Lamps that lit up the wilderness, their light

Love of roast meat summoned Hazim, then drove him
Zeal's love called Hazim, driving him
To a patterned blade whose grooves were steeped in poison.
To a renowned one whose pride was poison's core

With God's help, and then his mother's, he saved
He took refuge in God's help, then in his mother's
The last remnant of a life whose defender was absent.
A soul left without a helper to watch over
