عَفاmay pardon اللهُGod عَنconcerning لَيلَىLayla وَإِنand even if سَفَكَتshe shed دَمِىmy blood
عَفا اللهُ عَن لَيلَى وَإِن سَفَكَت دَمِى
فَإِنِّىfor indeed I وَإِنand even though لَمhas not تَجزِنِىshe requites me غيرُnot عاتِبِreproachful
فَإِنِّى وَإِن لَم تَجزِنِى غيرُ عاتِبِ
May God pardon Layla, even if she has shed my blood.
God forgive Layla even if she shed my blood
For I, though she has not requited me, am not reproachful
For even if none console me but the reproacher
عَلَيهاtoward her ولاand not مُبدٍvoicing لِلَيلَىto Layla شَكِيَّةًa complaint
عَلَيها ولا مُبدٍ لِلَيلَى شَكِيَّةً
وَقَدand may يَشتكِىcomplain المُشكَىthe afflicted one إِلَىto كُلِّevery صَاحِبِcompanion
وَقَد يَشتكِى المُشكَى إِلَى كُلِّ صَاحِبِ
toward her, nor do I voice a complaint to Layla,
Of her, I make no complaint whatsoever against Layla
though one afflicted may complain to every companion.
Though the complainant may complain to every friend
يَقُولُونَthey say تُبrepent مِنof حُبِّlove لَيلَىLayla وَوُدِّهاand affection for her
يَقُولُونَ تُب مِن حُبِّ لَيلَى وَوُدِّها
وَماand not أَناI مِنof حُبىmy love لِلَيلَىfor Layla بِتائِبِat all repentant
وَما أَنا مِن حُبى لِلَيلَى بِتائِبِ
They say, “Repent of loving Layla and of your affection for her.”
They say, repent of loving Layla and passion for her
But I do not repent of my love for Layla.
But I will never repent of my love for Layla
