Is the heart heedless of the memory of Umaymah?

Yes—when a bearer carries me to the grave.

My life for the one without whom the soul cannot be content,

    and the one concerning whom the reproaching women never prevail;

and the one who, if she saw me between two ranks, one with

my friend and the other a fierce foe, full of enmity,

would dishearten my brothers when I saw her

against me, among the people I fight.

And if I came seeking a drink—and she had

brimming springs with channels of their own—

parched, she would not say to me, 'Drink,' nor would she know

whether I would slake my thirst this year or when the next came round.
