حَلَفتُI swore لَهاto her أَنthat قَدindeed وَجَدتُI found مِنَfrom الهَوَىlove
حَلَفتُ لَها أَن قَد وَجَدتُ مِنَ الهَوَى
أَخاthe brother of المَوتِdeath لاnot بِدعاًone without precedent وَلاand not مُتَأشِّبَاa liar
أَخا المَوتِ لا بِدعاً وَلا مُتَأشِّبَا
I swore to her that through love I had found
I swore to her that I had found in love
death’s brother—not the first to suffer this, nor a liar.
A brother of death, not a pretender or a hypocrite,
وَقَدand indeed زَعمَتshe claimed لىto me ماnot فَعَلتُI did فَكَيفَso how لِىfor me
وَقَد زَعمَت لى ما فَعَلتُ فَكَيفَ لِى
إِذاwhen كُنتُI am مَردُودَrejected الكَلامِthe speech مُكَذَّبَاdeemed a liar
إِذا كُنتُ مَردُودَ الكَلامِ مُكَذَّبَا
Yet she claimed to me that I had not—what can I do,
And she claimed for me what I had done, so how could I
when my words are rejected and I am called a liar?
When I was denied in speech, called a liar,
