I remembered you while the blacksmith hammered his fetter
I remembered you while the blacksmith struck his chains
upon the shin, fashioned from a bent piece whose knobs stood out.
On the shin from a branch that brought shoes.
فَقُلتُso I said لِرَاعِىto the keeper of السِّجنِthe prison وَالسِّجنُwhile the prison جامِعٌgathering
قَبَائِلَtribes مِنfrom شَتَّىdiverse origins وشَتَّىand diverse ذُنُوبُهَاtheir offenses
So I said to the prison keeper, while the prison gathered
So I said to the guardian of the prison, and the prison brings together
tribes of diverse origins, their offenses equally diverse:
Tribes of diverse and diverse sins.
أَلاَoh لَيتَif only شِعرِىmy knowledge هَلwhether أَزُورَنَّI shall indeed visit نِسوَةًwomen
مُضَرَّجَةًstained بِالزَّعفَرانِwith saffron جُيُوبُهَاtheir garment necklines
Oh, if only I knew: shall I indeed visit women
Oh, I wish I knew, will I visit women
whose necklines are stained with saffron?
Drenched in saffron, their pockets.
وَهَلand shall أَلقَيَنI indeed meet بِالسِّدرِby the lote trees مِنfrom أَيمَنِthe right side of الحِمَىthe protected pasture

And shall I meet, by the lote trees on the right of the protected pasture,
Did they find relief at Sidr from the auspicious sanctuary
women sound in body but sick at heart?
Healing bodies, though hearts are ill.
بِهِنَّin them مِنَsome of الدَّاءِthe malady الّذِىthat أناI عارفٌknow
وَلاand not يَعرِفُknows الأَدواءَmaladies إِلاّexcept طَبِيبُهَاtheir physician
In them is something of the malady I know,
With them, from the disease I know well
and none knows maladies but their physician.
And only their doctor knows the cures.
عَلَيهِنَّfor them ماتَdied القَلبُthe heart مَوتاًa death وجانَبَتand drew away

For them the heart died utterly, and they were carried away
For them, the heart died a death, and they shunned
by separation, whose aftermath Death scattered [uncertain reading].
With them, an absent one intended, confusing its people.
