إِنّىindeed I لَبَاكٍsurely weeping وَماand what عذرِىmy excuse إِذاwhen هَمَلَتstreamed with tears
عَينىmy eye عَلَىfor الإِلفِthe beloved قَدalready جَرَّبتُهُI tested him خانَاhe proved faithless
I am indeed weeping—what excuse have I when tears stream
From my eye for a beloved I have tested and found faithless?
وماand not بُكاىَmy weeping عَلَىfrom ضِنٍّclinging بِوَصلِكُمُto union with you
وَلاnor اتّباعُكُمُmy pursuit of you بَعدَafter الَّذِىwhat كانَاhad happened
And my tears are not from clinging to union with you,
Nor is my pursuit of you after what has passed,
I am wary of them
لَمّاwhen رَأَيتُI saw جَدِيدَfresh الصُّرمِestrangement قَدalready حانَاwas at hand
But from fear of enemies whom I dread,
When I saw that fresh estrangement was at hand.
ياO سَلمَSalm باعَدَmay He keep far ربُّthe Lord of النَّاسِhumankind مُصبَحَكُمyour morning dwelling
مِنَّاfrom us وَباعَدَand may He keep far مِنfrom مُمسَاكِyour evening dwelling مُمسَانَاour evening dwelling
O Salm, may the Lord of mankind keep your morning dwelling far
From us, and keep our evening dwelling far from yours.
وَلاَand not رأيتُكُمُI saw you فِىin أَمنِthe safety of غَافيةٍslumber
حُلماًin a dream وَلاَnor غَفلةِthe heedlessness of الواشينَthe talebearers يَقظانَاawake
And may I never see you in the safety of slumber,
In a dream, nor awake while talebearers are heedless.
وَلاَand not شَرِبتُI drank بماءٍof water تَشربينَyou drink بِهِof it
وَلاَand not تجاورَlay side by side فِىamong الأمواتِthe dead قَبرَانَاour two graves
And may I never drink of water that you drink,
Nor may our two graves lie side by side among the dead.
