تَنَاسَfeign forgetting هَوَىlove for عَصماءَʿAṣmāʾ إِمّاif نَأَيتَهاyou go far from her
وَكَيفَand how تَناسِيكَyour feigned forgetting الّذِىwhat لَستَyou are not نَاسِياforgetting
Feign forgetting your love for ʿAṣmāʾ if you go far from her;
You forgot the love of Asma though you were not away from her,
Yet how can you feign forgetting what you have not forgotten?
And how could she forget you, when you have not forgotten?
لَعَمرِىby my life لَئِنif indeed عَصماءُʿAṣmāʾ شَطَّgrew distant مَزارُهاher place of visitation
لَقَدindeed زَوَّدَتshe supplied زاداًprovisions وَإِنand though قَلَّwas scant باقِيَاlasting
By my life, though ʿAṣmāʾ's abode lies far away,
By my life, if the dwelling of Asma has departed,
She has indeed given me lasting provisions, though scant.
She has provided provisions, though little remains.
وَماand not هىَit مِنfrom عَصماءَʿAṣmāʾ إِلاّbut تَحِيَّةٌa greeting
تُوَدِّعُنِيهاshe bids me farewell with it حِينَwhen حُمَّwas decreed ارتِحاليَاmy departure
And it is only a greeting from ʿAṣmāʾ,
She is none but Asma, a farewell,
With which she bade me farewell when my departure was decreed.
Bidding me adieu when my departure was decided.
لَيالَىَnights حَلَّتshe encamped بِالقَرِيَّينِat al-Qariyyayn حَلَّةًan encampment
وَذِىand Dhū مَرَخٍMarakh ياoh حَبّذاhow lovely ذاكَthat وادياa valley
On nights when she made camp at al-Qariyyayn,
Nights have befallen the two encampments,
And at Dhū Marakh—oh, how lovely that valley!
Oh how excellent is that valley with soft sand!
خَلِيلىَّmy two friends مِنfrom بَينشamong (apparent typo) الأَخِلاَّءِthe close friends لاlet not تَكُنbe
حِبالُكماyour cords (you two) أُنشُوطَةًa slipknot مِنamong حِبالِيَاmy cords
My two friends, from among my companions, let not
My two friends, amongst your comrades do not be
Your cords be a slipknot among my cords.
Bound in ties stronger than my ties.
وَلاand do not تَشقَيَاyou two suffer قَبلَbefore المَماتِdeath بِصُحبَتِىin my company
ولاand do not تَلبَسانِىyou two treat me لُبسَtreatment مَنone who كانَwas قاليَاbearing hatred
And do not suffer in my company before death,
Do not suffer before death in my company,
Nor treat me as one who hates me would.
And do not wear the garb of one who was disloyal.
فإنَّfor indeed فِراقِىmy parting سَوفَwill يُخلِفُreplace غَيرَهُsomething other than it
وَشِيكاًsoon وإِنand even if صاحَبتُمانِىyou two have accompanied me لَياليَاfor nights
For my parting will replace something other than itself,
For my separation will soon replace another,
Soon, even if you two have kept me company for nights.
And soon, though you kept me company nights.
