Come, you two, greet the ruins on the dust-colored sandy flats.

May the downpour of a deep, layered cloud water them to fullness,

Making [unclear word] flow, with slack flanks and smooth crests,

Bursting in showers, gushing moisture, lavish with rain.

Though they have stirred my longing, after

I had sought to cure my love for Umayma through estrangement.

Umaym, long has separation lasted, and I only

Contend with separation over undoing its tightly twisted [strands?].

    ولَن تَكسِبا خَيراً مِنَ الحَمدِ والأجرِ

    Come, my two friends, follow me, that you may be rewarded;

You will gain nothing better than praise and reward.

They both said: Fear God Most High, for only

The bonds of passion scorch you with the embers’ blaze.

I said: Obey me; neither of you bears

My reckoning when I meet my Lord, nor my burden of sin.

What I commit is upon me, not upon you two,

And my Lord is the one most fit to pardon and forgive.

Will You burn me, Lord, if I turn aside once

To one soft of limb and sweet of scent,

Full where her mantle wraps, with a firmly shaped midriff,

With a long fall for her earrings and a slender waist?

And I vow to the Merciful, as long as you remain unmarried—

And will You, Lord of the heights, make my vow binding?—

Fasting and pilgrimage, then sacrificial camels I shall lead,

Arriving with them on the day of sacrifices and slaughter.
