ومُنيةُand a desire نَفسٍof a soul عِندَwith مَنone who لاَnot ينالُهاattains it
My two friends, what avails nearness against separation,
And a soul’s desire, with one who cannot attain it,
وَإِشرافَىand my ascending الأَيفاعَthe heights فىin رَونَقِthe radiance of الضُّحَىthe forenoon
وَرَقرَاقُand the shimmering of عينيmy eye دَمعهاits tears وانهمالُهاand its streaming
And my climbing the heights in the forenoon’s radiance,
And my eye’s shimmering tears and their streaming?
نَظَرتُI gazed بمُفضَىat the outlet of سَيلِthe torrent of حُرشَينِḤurshayn والضُّحَىwhile the forenoon
يلوذُclings بأطرَافِto the edges of المَخارمِthe mountain passes آلُهَاits mirage
I gazed where Ḥurshayn’s torrent empties, while the forenoon’s
Mirage clung to the edges of the mountain passes,

مُصَاحَبَةُcompanionship with الإِخوَانِfriends ثُمَّthen زِيالُهَاits sundering
With an ever-sorrowing eye, whose tears were exhausted
By companionship with friends, and then its sundering.

When despair barred it from glimpsing the protected grounds—
The grounds of parting—its rim let the eye’s tears flow.
فياand oh لَيتَwould that شِعرىmy knowing هَلwhether تَغَيَّرَchanged بَعدَناafter us

Ah, would that I knew: have they changed since we left—
Those faded dwelling sites—or are their shades as I remember?
وهلand whether حُرِّمتwere forbidden تلكَthose المِياهُwaters عَلىto فتىًa young man
سواىَother than me وَهَلand whether خِيطَتwere laced بِرَنقٍwith murk ثِمالُهاtheir remaining water
Have those waters been forbidden to any youth
But me? And has their remaining water been laced with murk?

Then she said to us, among the things she says—
And I listen to her words, by my life—

“Women spoke of your wealth in our presence,
Cruel tales, whose burden is reckoned slight.

She turns away, possessing nothing but fear
For you—she who did not know what ruse to use.

And how can she incline, when she knows what
Her men have said about our love?”
