أَرَى غَدرَ ليلى يا خَليلىَّ حامِلي
عَلَىto غَدرَةٍan act of betrayal ماnot كانَwas قلبىmy heart يُطيقُهاable to bear it
عَلَى غَدرَةٍ ما كانَ قلبى يُطيقُها
I see Layla’s treachery, my two friends, driving me
To an act of betrayal my heart could not bear.
لَقَدindeed غَدَرَتshe has been faithless إِنّاindeed we إِلىto اللهِGod بَعدَماafter
لَقَد غَدَرَت إِنّا إِلى اللهِ بَعدَما
وَفَينَاwe kept faith وَكُنّاand we were كُلَّevery يَومِday نَشوقُهاwe stir her longing
وَفَينَا وَكُنّا كُلَّ يَومِ نَشوقُها
She has indeed been faithless—to God we turn—after
We kept faith and stirred her longing every day.
