It gleamed for us late at night, its light lifted
by a wind wafting dew and rain.
سَقياًblessings of rain لِمَوقِدِهاfor its hearth المَليحِthe lovely لَوif only أنَّهُthat it

May rain bless its lovely hearth! If only it
could one day be visited, despite the distance between our dwellings.
حَلَفَتswore أُمَيمَةُUmayma أَنَّthat وُدِّىmy love حَجّتmade pilgrimage لَهُto Him

شُعثَunkempt الرُّؤوسِthe heads بِمكَّةَat Mecca الأَبرَارthe righteous
Umayma swore that my love—pilgrimage was made to Him
by the righteous, unkempt of head, at Mecca;
كذَبَتlied أُمَيمَةُUmayma وَالّذىby the One who حَجّتmade pilgrimage لَهُto Him
مَذِقٌdiluted; insincere وَأَنّىand that I خَائنٌa betrayer غَدّارُtreacherous
Umayma lied, by Him to whom they made pilgrimage—
is insincere, and that I am a treacherous betrayer.
لوif تَعلَمِينَyou knew وَقَلَّمَاand seldom جَرَّبتِنىyou have tested me
وَالعِلمُand knowledge يَنفَعُbenefits وَالعَمَىand blindness ضَرَّارُvery harmful
If you knew—though you have seldom tested me,
and knowledge benefits, while blindness does great harm—
لَعَلِمتِthen you would know اَنّىthat I بالمَغِيبةِin your absence حَافِظٌa keeper
للسِّرِّof the secret مِنكِfrom you وَأنّنىand that I نَصّارُa staunch defender
you would know that, in your absence, I guard
your secret, and that I am a staunch defender.
