Ah, doves of al-Liwa, return once more,

For I long in sorrow for your voices.

So they returned; when they returned, they nearly killed me,

And I nearly disclosed my secrets to them.

And they returned with rumbling coos, as though

They had drunk potent wine, or madness possessed them.

Never before them had my eye seen doves

That wept, yet whose eyes shed no tears.

For they had been doves, all together in bliss,

Then became scattered, without a companion.

So they were parted, save for a single dove,

Whose plaintive cry rises at the memory of the doves.
