وَلَمّاand when أَبَىrefused إِلاّanything but جِماحاًunruliness فُؤَادُهُhis heart
وَلَمّا أَبَى إِلاّ جِماحاً فُؤَادُهُ
وَلَمand did not يَسلُforget عَنabout لَيلَىLayla بِمَالٍthrough wealth وَلاَnor أهلِfamily
وَلَم يَسلُ عَن لَيلَى بِمَالٍ وَلاَ أهلِ
And when his heart would do nothing but run wild,
and neither wealth nor family could make him forget Layla,
تَسَلَّىsought solace بِأُخرَىin another woman غَيرِهَاother than her فإِذَاbut then, behold الّتىthe woman whom
تَسَلَّى بِأُخرَى غَيرِهَا فإِذَا الّتى
تَسَلَّىsought solace بِهَاin her تَغرِىkindles longing بِلَيلَىfor Layla وَلاَand does not تُسلِىgive solace
تَسَلَّى بِهَا تَغرِى بِلَيلَى وَلاَ تُسلِى
he sought solace in another woman, but found that the one
in whom he sought solace stirred his longing for Layla and brought no comfort.
