My family and wealth be ransom for the one whose love has afflicted me,
With my family and wealth have I been afflicted for love of her
and who has made my innermost depths a lasting home,
She who dwells in my heart and soul
وَمَنand the one who وَجَلالِby the majesty of اللهِGod حَلفَةَan oath of صَادِقٍa truthful man
بريwore away حُبُّهُlove for him لَوif تَعلَمينَyou knew عِظامِىmy bones
and the one—by God's majesty, a truthful man's oath—
By God's majesty do I swear sincere allegiance
whose love, if you but knew, has worn away my bones.
My love for her permeates my bones if only she knew
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَيثنينيsurely holds me back وماthough not بىin me جَلادَةٌfortitude
عَنَfrom آتيكِI come to you أقوَامٌpeople عَلَىَّto me كِرامُdear
And I am indeed held back—though I have no fortitude—
Yet I refrain lest slanderers attack me
from coming to you by people dear to me,
Fearing to bring her harm or gain enmity
مَخافةَfor fear أنthat تَلقَيyou encounter أذىًharm أوor يُفيدَنىbrings me
هَوَاكِlove for you مَقاماَa place لَيسَis not لىfor me بِمَقَامِa place
for fear that you might suffer harm, or that I might be brought
Her love a glory I cannot claim
by love for you to a place that is no place for me.
They say, “He has grown hopeless and despondent.
يقولونَthey say قدalready أمسىhe is now وبَلَّand has recovered وَقَلّمَاand scarcely
أُبِلَّنَّI recover أوor يَعتَادَrecurs مِنكِfrom you سَقامِىmy sickness
They say, 'He has recovered now'; yet scarcely
He is lovesick and accustomed to her disdain."
do I recover before my sickness from you returns.
When I saw people turning against her
فلمّاso when رَأَيتُI saw النّاسَthe people فيكِon your account وَأَصبحُواand they became
أَعادِىَّmy enemies لَمnot يُردَدwas returned عليكِto you سَلامِىmy greeting
So when I saw how people, on your account, had become
I withheld my greetings though she was blameless
my enemies, my greeting to you was not returned.
She knew my enemies would thus be placated
علِمتِyou knew الَّذِىwhat يُرضِىpleases العِدَىthe enemies فَاَتَيتِهِso you did it
كأنas though لَمnot يَكُنthere had been مِنّاbetween us ذِمامُa bond
You knew what would please my foes, so you did it,
As though no bond had ever tied us
as though no bond had ever existed between us.
If she rewards her lover for his love
فإنso if كُنتِyou are تَجزِينَrewarding المُحِبَّthe lover بِحُبِّهِfor his love
أمَيمَO Umayma فَقَدthen indeed وَاللهِby God طالَhas lasted long هُيامِىmy consuming passion
So if you reward a lover for his love,
By God, my passion has long been spent
O Umayma, by God, my lovesickness has lasted long.
Else return my reason and bid me farewell
وَإِلاand if not فُردِّىthen restore العَقلَthe reason مِنّىfrom me وَسَلِّمِىand hand over
إِليَّto me فُؤَادِىmy heart وَاذهَبىand go بِسَلاَمِin peace
Otherwise, give me back my reason, and return
Give me back my heart and go in peace
my heart to me, and go in peace.
For the embraces of the fair are forbidden
وِصالُunion with الغَوَانىbeautiful women بعدَafter ماwhat قَدalready اذَقتِنىyou made me taste
عَلَىَّfor me إِذاif أَبلَلتُI recover مِنكِfrom you حَرَامُforbidden
Union with fair women, after what you have made me taste,
When I am drenched in the blood she made me spill
will be forbidden me, if ever I recover from you.
