وَعَمرِو بنِ عجلاَنَ الذى قَتَلَت هِندُ
And in ʿUrwa al-ʿUdhri, if I die, I have a consoling example,
In the chastity of Urwe there is a model if I die,
and in ʿAmr ibn ʿAjlan, whom Hind killed.
And Amr ibn Ajlān, whom Hind killed,
هَلِis الحُبُّlove إِلاّanything but زَفرَةٌa sigh بَعدَafter زَفرَةٍa sigh
هَلِ الحُبُّ إِلاّ زَفرَةٌ بَعدَ زَفرَةٍ

وَحَرٌّ عَلَى الأَحشَاءِ لَيسَ لَهُ بَردُ
Is love anything but sigh after sigh,
Is love anything but a sigh after a sigh,
and heat upon the entrails for which there is no coolness,
And a heat in the intestines that has no coolness?

and the eye’s tear ducts overflowing with tears whenever
And the overflowing of the eye at sunset with tears whenever
a landmark of your land comes into view that was not visible before?
A sign appeared from your land that did not used to appear.
