أَلاَAh! يَاO خَلِيلىَّmy two friends اللّذينِwhom (both) أَرَاهُماI see them both

Ah, my two friends, whom I see
Oh my two friends whom I saw
both possessed of kindness beyond every other friend,
Endowed with charm beyond any friend
قِفاhalt, you two لاَnot يَكُنlet it be حَظِّىmy lot وحَظُّكماand your lot (both) البُكاweeping

Halt, you two; let neither my lot nor yours be weeping
Stop, let not my share and your share be weeping
over a weathered ruin at al-Abraqayn.
Over a ruin with two pillars left standing
فإِنّىfor indeed I وَلاand no كُفرَانَingratitude لِلهِto God شِقوَةًmisery
لِنَفسِىfor my own soul لَقَدindeed تابَعتُI pursued غيرَnot مُنِيلِone who grants
For I—no ingratitude to God!—to the misery
For I, though thankless towards God, miserably
of my own soul, have indeed pursued one who grants nothing:
Followed my own inclinations

one given over to stinginess; the knot of her cord
Entrusted to miserliness, its rope not tied
does not endure, nor is her kindness bountiful.
With lasting knots or generous favor
وكُلُّand every خَليلِclose friend لاno أَبالَكَfather to you سائِقِىone who leads me

And every friend—may you have no father!—leads me
And every friend who does not care if he leads me
to betrayal, or sells me for another friend.
To betrayal or sells me for a friend
خَيالُكِyour phantom أَدنَىnearer مِنكِthan you وَصلاًin union إِذاwhen سَرَىit journeyed by night
إِلَيناto us بلاwithout نَعتٍa description ولاnor بِدَلِيلِwith a guide
Your phantom comes closer to union than you, when it journeys by night
Your apparition comes closer to me than you when it travels
to us, without a description and without a guide.
To us without description or guide
وصدَّand it turned away كماas عودّتِهِyou accustomed it غَيرَexcept أَنَّهُthat it
عَلَىdespite الهَولِterror والإِيعادِand threats غَيرُnot مَلُولِprone to weariness
And it turned away, as you had accustomed it to do; yet it
And it turns away as is its habit except
does not weary, despite terror and threats.
It is unrelenting in threats and promises
