For I am indeed in doubt, and there is no obscurity
I'm in doubt, with no escape from blindness,
of doubt whose night will not eventually be dispelled.
Doubt will later clearly reveal its secret.
يَهيجُstirs عليَّwithin me الشَّوقَlonging صَوتُthe call of حمامَةٍa dove

The call of a dove stirs longing within me—
The cooing of a ring-doved stirs my passion,
a collared dove whose cooing slays the lover.
Slaughtered by longing is her broken moan.
وَلَوand even if لَمdid not تَهِجهُit rouses him هَيَّجَتهُit would rouse him مُخيلةٌa rain-promising cloud

And even if it did not rouse him, a raincloud would,
If her voice didn't stir me, fancy would -
seen at Baq‘a in the wilderness by one scanning it for rain.
I see her in the wide desert's expanse.

She departed into exile; her dwelling has grown distant—an exile
Exile has spread, the house is far in exile,
in Tayma, whose stars appear by day.
In desolate Tíma stars shine at noon.
فَوَاللهِso, by God ماnot أَدرِىI know إِذَاwhen ماemphatic particle حَمِدتُهَاI praise her
علاَمَfor what وَلاَnor فِىfor أَىِّwhich ذَنبٍfault أَلُومُهاI blame her
So, by God, when I praise her, I do not know
By God, I don't know, when I blame her,
what for, nor for what fault I should blame her.
Why, or what fault of hers I reprove -
نَأتshe went far away وَنأَيناand we went far away ثُمَّthen لَمdid not نَدرِwe know مُذsince نأَتshe went far away

أَتَقطَعُdoes she sever? أَسبابَthe bonds of الهوَىlove أَمor تُدِيمهاshe sustains them
She went far away, and so did we; since she left, we have not known
We left, left them, and since leaving
whether she will sever the bonds of love or sustain them.
Do we break passion's ties or make them last?
