My two friends, I have lain sleepless while you slept.
Will you two travel before dawn with the pale camels?
فقالاso they both said أَنِمتَdid you sleep اللَّيلَthe night ثُمَّthen دَعَوتَنَاyou called us

They said, “Did you sleep through the night, then call us,
while we are two young lads, only just drowsy?
فَقُمso get up حَيثُwhere تَهوىyou desire إِنَّناindeed we حَيثُwhere نَشتهىwe wish

وإِنand if رُمتَyou sought تَعرِيسابًa halt for sleep بِنَاwith us غَرِضانِboth weary
Go where you please; we stay where we wish.
And if you seek a halt for sleep with us, we are both weary.”

to the encampment of al-Qarʿa, then leave me.

My two heart-enslavers have settled at Shaqiqa,
halfway between al-Liwa and Qiran.
خَليلىَّmy two friends كُفَّاالألسُنَyou two, restrain the tongues العُوجَcrooked وَاعلماand know, you two

My two friends, still the crooked tongues, and know
for certain that no exhaustion afflicts me; leave me alone.
وإِنّىand indeed I تَدَبَّرتُconsidered carefully الأُمُورَthe affairs وَاعلماand know, you two

I have pondered these matters—and know this—
in myself and other young men, for some time.

I have not harried a companion with reproach, nor found
a carefree man and one burdened with grief to be alike.
أَحَقًّاis it true عِبَادَservants of اللهِGod أَنthat لَستُI am not مَاشِياًwalking

Is it true, servants of God, that I shall not walk
in Marhab until humans and jinn are gathered?

with fair, slender-waisted women whose gazes linger?

They fill us with hopes until our minds stray,
and mingle open delay with gentleness.

My love for Umm al-Ghamr is nothing but an inborn nature,
upon which God fashioned me, then folded me.

He folded me upon love for her and an inborn nature—
yes, while the noses of my spiteful foes are humbled.

as thirsty camels are driven from pools of water, after
seven days and eight have passed for them in the wilderness.

in Tathlith or al-Khatt, the Khatt of Oman,

I would wish for God to bring us together,
however He wished in this world, so that we two might meet.

We were two noble members of a clan; between us was ordained
mutual affection, which we kept well guarded.

It will remain unworn, hidden and unseen;
they have learned nothing clear about our affair.

Among people are two persons who owe me a debt,
both solvent; had they wished, they would have repaid me.
خَليلىَّmy two friends أَمّاas for أُمُّUmm (mother of) عَمروٍʿAmr فمنهماshe is one of the two

My two friends, Umm ʿAmr is one of them;
but do not ask me about the other.

Both are withholding and unjust; neither treats me fairly.
With their coy charms and beauty, they have bewitched me.

Two fair, wide-eyed women, both nourished by
luxury and a life firmly settled, its camel-neck laid down.

They persist until people suppose that I
have been repaid; no, by God, they have not repaid me.

Do you aim at her lands every day
with two eyes whose pupils stream with tears?

When my eyes brim with tears, my companions say,
“Your eyes are surely addicted to streaming tears.”

And if my two companions do not share with me in mentioning her,
I ache from my inward folds, and they both find me intolerable.
أَطَعتُكِI obeyed you حَتىuntil أَبغَضَتنىhated me عَشِيرتيmy clan

I obeyed you until my clan hated me,
and my leader moved my seat far away and shunned me.

I traded arrows with my own soul for you, until you shot me
with the thirsting archer, where he shot me.

And your greatest loss has departed at dusk or dawn,
and parted without fault or hatred.

I bade him farewell, then turned away, as though I were
adrift, untouched by the burning anguish of time's turns.

Perhaps the guilt will remain yours in his eyes,
and you will be repaid for it, if both life-terms are delayed.

By the life of Ashma's father—and distance brings healing—
I have long seen that prolonged estrangement has healed me.
خَليلىَّmy two friends مَكُنُونُthe hidden part of الهوىlove صَدَعsplit الحَشاthe inmost heart
فكيفَso how بمَكنونِregarding the hidden part of الهوىlove تَرَيانِdo you two think
My two friends, hidden love has split my inmost heart;
so what do you two make of hidden love?
بَرَىwore away الحبُّlove جِسمىmy body غَيرَexcept جُثمانِthe frame of أَعظُميmy bones
بَلِينَthey have wasted away وإنّىand indeed I ناطِقٌspeaking بِلسانِىwith my tongue
Love has worn away my body, save the frame of my bones;
they have wasted away, though I still speak with my tongue.
أَلاَcome هَلshall أدُلُّI guide الوارِدَينِthe two coming to water عَشِيَّةًat evening

Shall I guide the two who come to water at evening
to a drinking place other than the one they frequent?
عَلَىto مَشرَبٍa drinking place سَهلِeasy الشَّرِيعَةِthe path to water بارِدٍcool
هُوَit is المُستَقَىthe water-drawing place لاnot حَيثُwhere يَستَقِيانِthey both draw water
To a cool drinking place with an easy path to the water:
it is the place to draw water, not where those two draw.
فإنَّfor indeed عَلَىat الماءِthe water الّذِىthat يَرِدَانِهِthey both visit it for water

For at the water they come to drink
is a debtor who has long delayed paying me,

slender-waisted, full-limbed, of good repute,
with endless excuses and hopes.

If I were flogged with the prescribed penalty for his sake, I would endure it;
and shackled, I would not weary of shuffling in fetters.
فَمُرّاso pass by, you two فَقُولاَand say, you two نحنُwe نطلُبُseek حاجةًa favor

Pass by, then, and say, “We seek a favor,”
and return and say, “We are leaving.”

If there is reward in separation, surely it has already accrued
to me—the reward for separation, you two young men.
فَوَاللهِso by God مَاnot أَدرِىI know أكلُّwhether all ذَوِىthose possessed of الهَوىlove

By God, I do not know whether all lovers
are as we are, or only we two are afflicted.
وَإِنّاand indeed we لمشهورانِare surely well known مُؤتَمَرٌschemes are laid بناagainst us

بُلقيانِin meeting مَنthose whom لاnot نَشتَهِىwe desire ظَفِرَانِboth successful
We are indeed well known, with schemes laid against us,
both successful in meeting those we do not desire.
وَإِنّاand indeed we لَمِنare surely from حَيَّينِtwo clans شَتَّىseparate وَإِنَّناand indeed we

We are indeed from two separate clans, yet we,
despite that, shall surely meet as long as we live.
