وَأَذكُرُand I recall أَيّامَdays الحِمَىal-Hima (the protected pasture) ثُمَّthen أَنثَنِىI bend
عَلَىover كَبِدِىmy liver مِنout of خَشيَةٍfear أَنthat تَصَدعَاit might split apart
And I recall the days of al-Hima, then bend
I recall the days of fever, then I bend
over my liver, for fear that it might split apart.
Over my liver out of fear that it might split
وَلَيسَتand are not عَشِيّاتُevenings الحِمَىal-Hima (the protected pasture) بِرَواجِعِreturning
عَلَيكَto you وَلَكِنand yet خَلِّlet عَينَيكَyour two eyes تَدمَعَاboth weep
And the evenings of al-Hima will not return
And the evenings of fever do not return
to you; but let both your eyes weep.
To you, but let your eyes shed tears
بَكَتwept عَينِىmy eye اليُمنَىthe right فَلَمّاthen when زَجَرَتُهاI rebuked it
عَنِfrom الجَهلِfolly بَعدَafter الحِلمِself-restraint أَسبَلَتاboth shed tears مَعاtogether
My right eye wept; then, when I admonished it
My right eye wept, so when I rebuked it
against folly after self-restraint, both shed tears together.
For ignorance after wisdom, both flowed together
