أَلاOh! لَيتَناwould that we نَحياlive جِميعاًtogether بِبَلدَةٍin a town
أَلا لَيتَنا نَحيا جِميعاً بِبَلدَةٍ
وَتَبلَىand decay عِظَامِىmy bones حَيثُwhere تَبلَىdecay عِظامُهاher bones
وَتَبلَى عِظَامِى حَيثُ تَبلَى عِظامُها
Oh, would that we might live together in one town,
Alas! if only we could live united in one place,
And my bones decay where her bones decay.
And let my bones decay where her bones decay,
نَكونُwe would be كَماjust as كانَwere المُحِبُّونَthe lovers قَبلَناbefore us
نَكونُ كَما كانَ المُحِبُّونَ قَبلَنا
إِذاwhen ماتَdied مَوتاهاits dead تَعارَفَrecognized one another هامُهاits skulls
إِذا ماتَ مَوتاها تَعارَفَ هامُها
We would be as the lovers before us were:
We could be as past lovers were before us,
When its people died, their skulls recognized one another.
Separated in death, to be joined in their sorrow.
