فللَهso to God ربthe Lord الحمدpraise والشكرand gratitude والثناand acclaim
We reached the quarter that lies this side of our hopes.
We reached the neighborhood just before Munā,
So to God, the Lord, belong praise, gratitude, and acclaim.
So praise and thanks to Allah, the Lord of all.
وزرناand we visited عروسthe bride of الحيthe quarter وسطwithin خبائهاher tent
مسربلةclad بالحسنin beauty والنورand light والثناand acclaim
And we visited the quarter's bride within her tent,
We visited the bride of the neighborhood amidst her tents,
Clad in beauty, light, and acclaim.
Dressed in beauty, light, and splendor.
وطفناand we circumambulated بهاaround her مستأنسينtaking comfort بقربهاin her nearness
وتقبيلand kissing خالbeauty spot of الخدthe cheek ياO سعدgood fortune منwhoever دناdrew near
And we circled her, taking comfort in her nearness,
We circled her, made happy by her nearness,
And kissing the cheek's beauty spot—how fortunate whoever drew near!
And kissing her cheek—what bliss for one brought near.
وَشاهَدتand beheld الأَرواحthe spirits مِناamong us مَشاعِراًsacred sites
مَعظمةvenerated قَدindeed ضَمهاenclosed them البيتthe House والفَناand the courtyard
And our spirits beheld sacred sites,
Our spirits witnessed magnificent feelings there,
Venerated, embraced by the House and the courtyard:
Contained within the House and selflessness sincere.
مَقامthe Station وَحَجرand the Stone وَالشَرابand the drink وَإِنَّهُand indeed it
لِكَوثَرsurely Kawthar دارَthe abode of الخُلدeternity فيin عالمthe world of الفَناtransience
The Station, the Stone, and the drink—indeed, it is
A station, stones, and drink—all this is like
Truly Kawthar of the eternal abode in this transient world.
A Kauthar; the Abode of Eternity so near.
وَكَمand how many مَرةa time عانَقهاhe embraced her وَالتزمتهاand I clung to her
بِملتزمat the Multazam الخَيراتblessings وَالفَوزand triumph وَالهَناand bliss
And how often he embraced her, and I clung to her,
How often we embraced her and held her close,
At the Multazam of blessings, triumph, and bliss.
With a firm embrace of goodness, triumph, cheer.
وَرُحتُand I departed وَلَمand did not أَشفquench الغَليلthe burning thirst وَلاnor اِنقَضتended
أَمانيwishes نَفسa soul مِنfrom لُقاهاmeeting her وَلاnor عَناanguish
And I departed without quenching my burning thirst, with no end
I left, my thirst unquenched, hopes unfulfilled,
To my soul's wishes to meet her, nor to its anguish.
Of seeing her again, though time brought no relief.
وَسرتand I journeyed وَفيand in قَلبيmy heart إَلَيهاtoward her تَشوقlonging
وَفيهِand in it التفاتa turning back لَوeven if سَلاforgot الدَهرTime ماnot اِنثناturned away
And I journeyed on, with longing for her in my heart,
I traveled on, yearning for her in my heart,
And in it a gaze that would not turn away, even if Time forgot.
My thoughts still turned to her, come whatever severe.
وَأَجمَلتand I summarized قَصداياdeliberately, O أَخاbrother of السَمعlistening ماwhat جَرىhappened
هُناكَthere وَلوand if فَصَلتهُI detailed it هاجَstirred بيwithin me العَناanguish
And I deliberately summarized, O listening brother, what happened
I summarized for my brother what happened there,
There—for had I detailed it, anguish would have stirred within me.
Though if I elaborated, passion would appear.
رَعىmay He preserve اللَهُGod رَبLord of العالمينthe worlds عَشيةan evening
وَقَفناwe stood بِهاduring it دُونَthis side of المَشاعرthe sacred sites مِنof مُنىMina
May God, Lord of the worlds, preserve that evening
May Allah, Lord of all worlds, bless the eve
When we stood, this side of the sacred sites of Mina,
We stood below the stations, coming from Munā.
عَلىon عَرفاتArafat الخَيرgoodness وَالعَفوand pardon وَالرِضاand favor
لِمَنfor whoever كانَwas مِناamong us مُحسِناًdoing good وَلِمَنand for whoever جَنىsinned
On Arafat of goodness, pardon, and favor,
At Arafāt of kindness, pardon, and consent,
For those among us who did good, and for those who sinned.
For whoever did good or crossed that frontier.
وَحَيىand may He bless لَياليthe nights of الخيفal-Khayf ماnot كانَwas مِثلَهاtheir like
سِوىexcept مثلthe likeness of طَيفa phantom فيin المَنامsleep دَناdrew near وَناwaned
And may He bless the nights of al-Khayf; nothing was like them
Those nights of fear were unmatched throughout all time,
Save the likeness of a phantom in sleep that drew near and waned.
Save only like a dream that came and disappeared.
عَسىmay it be وَعَسىand may it be أَنthat تَنثَنيthey turn back وَتَعودand return ليto me

May they—may they—turn back and return to me,
May it be—may it be—that you will return to me
Through the grace of Him great in bounty, generosity, and acclaim.
By the grace of the Bountiful Lord so dear.

And may my God send blessings at every time and hour
My God, bless the Chosen One, the Prophet for all times,
Upon the Chosen One, the Elect, our Lord's choicest one.
At every instant, for he is most sincere.
