فهلis there, then منany سبيلa path ماat all إلىto العلمknowledge العلويheavenly
The lightning flashed by night from Najd, stirring my sorrow.
The lightning flashed from Najd so it stirred my yearning.
Is there, then, any path at all to heavenly knowledge,
Is there a way to supreme knowledge,

To the highest assembly, to nearness and meeting,
To the highest company, to nearness and meeting,
To its Mount Sinai, to the direction and the course?
To Sinai's mount, to syntax and grammar?

So may the rain greet Najd and greet its heart,
So greet the living, greet Najd and its loveliness
With a dark cloud pouring rain, not hastening to clear skies,
With a morning that hastens not to awaken.

And with every breeze trailing its skirts,
And a trailing cloud from every breeze,
Scented with ambergris, while the night prepares to deepen,
Ambergris-scented, and the night about to gain strength,

And with a cooing gray dove among its branch-tips,
A gray murmuring in her sweetnesses,
Evoking a bygone time, when the bough had not yet withered.
Reminding of a pact that was, when the branch was unbent.
فآهso, ah علىfor الأحبابthe loved ones بالحيin the camp إذwhen غدواthey left in the morning
وراحواand departed in the evening وماand not منهمof them علىtoward الحيthe camp منanyone who يلويturns back
Ah, for the loved ones in the camp, when they left in the morning,
Oh, for the loved ones, living, who are gone,
And departed in the evening, none of them turning back toward the camp.
Departed, none left in the abode to lament.
فهلis there, then عودةa return للنازجيننfor those far away إلىto الحمىthe sanctuary

ومنand from وردهمtheir water أروىI am quenched ومنand from فضلهمtheir bounty أروىI am quenched
Is there, then, a return for those far away to the sanctuary,
Is there a return for the delicate ones to the sanctuary,
And may I be quenched by their water, and quenched by their bounty?
By whom I slake my thirst, of their remainder I slake my thirst,

And through them, the one slain by longing and heartache lives again—
And by them lives again one dead of youth and ardor,
The heart and the body that is likened to air.
Of heart and body resembling the ambience?

When those days of his, already past, were effaced,
When his days pour away, already the new moon has set
And passed like wild beasts fleeing through the open desert,
And passed like the wild things bolting in alarm.

He wept for them with tears that stained his cheeks,
She wept it with a tear crimsoning her cheek,
As the dusty earth is stained by a rainstorm’s downpour.
As the dust colors crimson from the first drops of rain,

And what has happened has happened, O heart, so be patient,
What's done is done, O heart, so resign yourself
And submit to the Lord of the Throne; you will be given what you intend.
And surrender to the Lord of the Throne; give what you wish.

غنىfreedom from need عنof جميعall الكائناتcreated things وماand what تحويthey contain
For in Him—exalted be His glory and majesty—
In Him, exalted be His glory and His majesty,
Is freedom from need of all created things and what they contain.
Rich without all creatures whatsoever contain.
