O you whose love abides in my heart,

and whose beauty stands constant before my eyes,

is there a way for me to union with you

    before my bones crumble away,

and the secret you have guarded comes to light—

love for you, hidden from my foe and close friend?

O my masters, bestow favor upon me, your servant,

long wandering and distraught with love for you.

Have pity on one so afflicted [wording unclear],

with a mighty turmoil of longing in his heart.

If the reproacher knew his plight

over your beauty, he would become tender and merciful.

I blamed myself when time held sway,

and I had not beheld their beauty, O companion.

Nor did I ever learn their secret,

that secret in which men wander enraptured.

    نَفسي بِهِ تَدري وَقَلبي عَليمُ

    What held me back is not hidden from me;

my soul knows it, and my heart is aware.

I resolved to sever every attachment I see

whose severing brings attainment of the noble station.

And I renounce the deceptive world,

from love of which the abiding veil arose.

And the self and Satan—I disobey them both

through the power of God, the Mighty, the All-Wise.

I turn my back on created things, and do not

see any but God, the Most High, the Magnificent.

O Lord, grant me from Yourself sound certainty,

and the protection of truthfulness, and a sound heart,

and soaring resolve, and beautiful patience,

and the light of enabling grace, by which I walk upright,

and gracious support, and help that endures.

For You are the Everlasting, and Your bounty is all-embracing.

I beseech You to grant me what I seek,

through Your grace alone, not through my blameworthy striving.
