O soul, what you are doing is astonishing:

O soul, this which you are doing is strange

knowledge and reason, yet neither devotion nor good conduct.

علم اللسان وجهل القلب والسبب

حب المتاع وحب الجاه فانتبهى

is love of worldly goods and love of prestige, so take heed

Love of possessions and love of status so beware

before the pages and books are folded shut upon you,

Lest the pages and books testify against you

وتصبحين بقبر لا أنيس به

وتصبحين بقبر لا أنيس به

الأهل والصحب لما ألحدوا ذهبوا

الأهل والصحب لما ألحدوا ذهبوا

and you find yourself in a grave with no companion.

And you wake up in a grave with no companion

Family and companions, once they laid you in the grave, departed,

Family and friends when they bury you, they leave

وخلفوك وما أسلفت من غمل

وخلفوك وما أسلفت من غمل

فالمال مستأخر والكسب مصطحب

فالمال مستأخر والكسب مصطحب

and left you behind with whatever deeds you had sent ahead.

Leaving you behind with the evils you have sent forth

So wealth is left behind, while what you earned accompanies you.

For wealth is delayed and deeds accompany

واستيقني أن بعد الموت مجتمعاً

واستيقني أن بعد الموت مجتمعاً

للعالمين فتأتي العجم والعرب

للعالمين فتأتي العجم والعرب

And be certain that after death there will be a gathering

And be certain that after death all will gather

for all beings; then non-Arabs and Arabs will come,

Foreigners and Arabs and people scattered about

والخلق طرا فيجزيهم بما عملوا

والخلق طرا فيجزيهم بما عملوا

في يوم لا ينفع الأموال والحسب

في يوم لا ينفع الأموال والحسب

and all creation together; then He will recompense them for what they did,

And He will judge them for what they have done

on a day when wealth and ancestral honor are of no avail.

On a day when wealth and lineage will not avail

وأخشى رجوعا إلى عدل توعد من

وأخشى رجوعا إلى عدل توعد من

لا يتقيه بنار حشوها القصب

لا يتقيه بنار حشوها القصب

And I fear returning to the Just One, who has threatened whoever

And I fear returning to the justice that is promised by

does not fear Him with a fire filled with reeds.

One who is not feared, of a fire filled with reeds

وقودها الناس والأحجار حامية

وقودها الناس والأحجار حامية

لا تنطفي أبد الآباد تلتهب

لا تنطفي أبد الآباد تلتهب

Its fuel is people and stones; it is scorching hot,

Its fuel is people and stones, burning

never going out, but blazing for ever and ever.

Never extinguishing for all eternity, blazing

والبعد عن جنة الخلد التي حشيت

والبعد عن جنة الخلد التي حشيت

بالطيبات ولا موت ولا نصب

بالطيبات ولا موت ولا نصب

And I fear being kept far from the Garden of Eternity, which is filled

And being far from the eternal Garden filled

with delights, where there is neither death nor weariness.

With fragrances and no death or fatigue

فيها الفواكه والأنهار جارية

فيها الفواكه والأنهار جارية

والنور والحور والولدان والقبب

والنور والحور والولدان والقبب

In it are fruits and flowing rivers,

In it are fruits, rivers, light

and light, houris, youths, and domes.

And maidens, tents and youths

وهذه الدار دار لا بقاء لها

وهذه الدار دار لا بقاء لها

لا يفتننك منها الورق والذهب

لا يفتننك منها الورق والذهب

And this abode is an abode with no permanence;

While this abode has no permanence

do not let its silver and gold tempt you,

Do not be deceived by its gold, silver or youth

والأهل والمال والمركوب تركبه

والأهل والمال والمركوب تركبه

والثوب تلبسه فالكل ينقلب

والثوب تلبسه فالكل ينقلب

nor family, wealth, or the mount you ride,

Possessions, ride and clothes you wear for all will perish

nor the garment you wear, for everything changes.

May God not bless the world except for a purpose

لا بارك اللَه في الدنيا سوى غرض

لا بارك اللَه في الدنيا سوى غرض

منها يعد إذا ما عدت القرب

منها يعد إذا ما عدت القرب

May God bless nothing in this world save a pursuit

To come closer to Him, this is what matters

within it, counted when acts of devotion are counted,

Not ostentation which is but lies and deceit

يريد صاحبه وجه الإله به

يريد صاحبه وجه الإله به

دون الريا إنه التلبيس والكذب

دون الريا إنه التلبيس والكذب

whose pursuer seeks through it the face of God,

God does not accept deeds that increase

without ostentation, for that is deception and falsehood.

For the doer other than the sake of God so refrain

لا يقبل اللَه أعمالاً يزيد بها

لا يقبل اللَه أعمالاً يزيد بها

عاملها غير وجه اللَه فاجتنبوا

عاملها غير وجه اللَه فاجتنبوا

God does not accept deeds intended

It is complete, bestow prayers upon our Master

by their doer for anything but God's face; so avoid such deeds.

His family and companions whose love is a must

تمت وصلوا على المختار سيدنا

تمت وصلوا على المختار سيدنا

والآل والصحب قوم حبهم يجب

والآل والصحب قوم حبهم يجب

It is complete; and send blessings upon the Chosen One, our master,

and his family and companions, a people whom we must love.
