May the one who afflicted us with separation be generous,

And may the brief nights of meeting return.

And may a maiden gladden me with union after separation—

Rosy-cheeked, slender of figure, and bashful—

And cool the heat and burning anguish in my heart,

Whose fuel lies beneath the curves of my ribs.

My two friends, my tears upon my cheek bear witness

Against me to a longing ever present in my heart.

And how often I sought to hide my love for the gazelle of the sanctuary,

Yet I could not, for the visible signs bore witness:

Wasting, sorrow, pallor, and burning anguish,

And long sleeplessness while humankind lay asleep.

So no hope now remains to me of concealing it,

Even if reproachers and the envious wrong me.

I endure sorrows; were they to endure their like,

Existence would close in upon them with anguish.

They say what they will; sufficient for me and them is

    A mighty God, all-knowing and a witness.

Have you not seen, O Sa'd, that affliction has touched me,

And that I have nearly perished from severe wasting sickness?

If, then, I hold you—a companion lends aid

And helps when calamities strike—in high regard,

Then hasten, go on my behalf, and take a message for me

To the one who dwells in my heart, though he is far away.

Deliver it amid weeping and tears,

And you bear affection, sincere and steadfast.

And say to the heart's beloved, the one who makes me

Happy among humankind through my love for him:

Your humble servant, my lord—rescue him, for he is

Alone, solitary, while the times are harsh.

His days have passed, and his affairs have turned

Against him; so covenants have been shaken.

    فمنوا وجودوا يا كرام وغودوا

    And nothing remains but what he hopes for from you;

So grant favor and be generous, O noble ones, and return.
