If this, which I struggle to endure,
is kept upon me, I cannot bear it patiently.
ماnot أَناI مِنof حَجَرٍstone وَلاnor مَدَرِclay

ماnot أَناI إِلّاexcept كَماas تَرىyou see بَشَرُa human being
I am made neither of stone nor of clay;
I am only, as you see, a human being.

Mine is a palatable draught; its murkiness
is a taint from the self—impurity has muddied it.

Bitter to the taste; and if it chokes him,
the grave and patience would fall short of it.

I shall surely complain of You to those who are
to me mere dust, when vision reaches its limit.

If ever I turn aside under some sudden affliction,
I ask Your pardon for it even now.

There is none but You; the veil lies upon
groups confined within their bodies.

Those whose understanding falls short—if they knew
what the gnostics know, they would allow no excuse.

As though there were nothing beyond this;
as though they had never existed, or had been buried.

Visions I witness with the heart,
from knowledge's inward depths—sight falls short of them.
فَالجودُso bounty إِنif آمَنواthey believe وَإِنand if شَكَرواthey give thanks

وَالقَهرُand overpowering might إِنif كَذَبواthey lie وَإِنand if كَفَرواthey disbelieve
Thus bounty, if they believe and if they give thanks;
and overpowering might, if they lie and if they disbelieve;
وَالعَدلُand justice إِنif عَذَّبواthey are punished وَإِنand if هَتَكواthey are exposed

and justice, if they are punished and if they are exposed;
and grace, if they are shown mercy and if they are veiled.

I am not ignorant of the wisdom that has appeared
within their creation; nor do I leave

فَالمَذهَبانِfor the two doctrines كِلاهُماboth of them ضَرَرُharm
any place for determinism [reading uncertain] or Muʿtazilism;
for both doctrines are harmful.

I negate and affirm, unconcerned
by anyone who says, 'This is dangerous.'

And the straight doctrine I follow is
the Book's text and tradition's edifice:

pure certainty and unalloyed knowledge
of particular witnessing and all-embracing decree.

I admit no doubt into the house of my belief;
I encase it, or else life's changes will batter it.

This is why anguish has seized
my soul, and impatience has become its companion.

بَلrather لاnot أَزالُI cease إِلَيكَto You مُفتَقَرُin need
O my refuge, I speak not merely in distress;
rather, I am always in need of You.

I would be lost in folly if You recounted how,
though You have turned me away, I boast of love.

Humility is my robe as long as I live, just as
I have girded myself with my helplessness.

The servants' condition—and I never depart from it;
it is enough, and to it I confine myself.

in thanksgiving, fear would still surpass it.

You treated me kindly from the outset;
You made me a trace, when no trace had been.
