وتسلو عن الأحباب بالعلم الفرد

وتسلو عن الأحباب بالعلم الفرد

O driver of the mounts, how long will you linger in estrangement,

O little driver of the riding camels, how long will you linger in estrangement,

finding solace from loved ones in the lone landmark?

And forget your loved ones beside the solitary peak?

كأنك لا تشتاق مثلي لقربهم

كأنك لا تشتاق مثلي لقربهم

وعندك ما عندي ما الحب والود

وعندك ما عندي ما الحب والود

As though you did not yearn, as I do, to be near them,

As though you did not long, as I do, to be near them,

though you feel what I feel—what, then, are love and affection?

Though you have what I have—love and affection—

ولا تذكر العهد القديم برامة

ولا تذكر العهد القديم برامة

وأحد وسلع يا رعى اللَه من عهد

وأحد وسلع يا رعى اللَه من عهد

Nor do you remember the old days at Barāmah,

Nor remember the old pledge at Rāmah,

and Uhud and Salaʿ—oh, may God preserve that time!

And Uḥud and Salʿ—oh, may God preserve that pledge!

بنفسي أفدي النازلين بطيبة

بنفسي أفدي النازلين بطيبة

وأهلي فهل تفديهم مثل ما أفدي

وأهلي فهل تفديهم مثل ما أفدي

With my life I would ransom those dwelling in Taybah,

With my own life I ransom those dwelling in Ṭayba,

my own people—would you ransom them as I do?

And with my family—will you ransom them as I do?

وإلا فساعدني على قصد سوحهم

وإلا فساعدني على قصد سوحهم

وخذ كل ما تطلبه مما ترى عندي

وخذ كل ما تطلبه مما ترى عندي

If not, then help me set my course for their courtyards,

Otherwise, help me make for their precincts,

and take whatever you desire of all you see I possess.

And take all you ask for from what you see I possess.

فهيا بنا ننضي المطايا ونطوي ال

فهيا بنا ننضي المطايا ونطوي ال

مهامه حتى تبلغ الحي من نجد

مهامه حتى تبلغ الحي من نجد

Come then: let us wear down the mounts and traverse the—

So come: let us wear out the riding camels and fold up the

trackless wastes, until you reach the encampment from Najd,

Trackless wastes, until they reach the encampment in Najd.

مرابع أحباب لنا ومآرب

مرابع أحباب لنا ومآرب

لنا لم تقض في بعض زمن البعد

لنا لم تقض في بعض زمن البعد

the haunts of beloveds of ours, and desires

The spring dwellings of our loved ones, and desires

of ours, unfulfilled through this season of separation.

Of ours, unfulfilled during part of the time apart.

وهل تنقضي في البعد آراب طالب

وهل تنقضي في البعد آراب طالب

ولكنه يدنو فيدني من القصد

ولكنه يدنو فيدني من القصد

Can a seeker's desires be fulfilled while far away?

And can a seeker's desires be fulfilled in separation?

Yet he draws near, and brings me nearer the goal.

But he draws near, thus coming closer to his goal.

وقد كنت وافيت الأباطح مرة

وقد كنت وافيت الأباطح مرة

ولكنني لم أرو من ذلك الورد

ولكنني لم أرو من ذلك الورد

Once I came to the broad valleys of Mecca,

And I once reached al-Abāṭiḥ, the gravelly valleys,

but did not slake my thirst at that watering place;

But I did not drink my fill from that draught.

ولم أشتفي من قرب سلمى ووصلها

ولم أشتفي من قرب سلمى ووصلها

وتقبيل خال الخد مستودع العهد

وتقبيل خال الخد مستودع العهد

nor did I heal myself with Salmā's nearness and union,

Nor did I find relief in nearness to Salmā and union with her,

or kiss the beauty mark upon her cheek, repository of our pledge.

And kissing the beauty spot on her cheek, the repository of the pledge.

ووافيت أيضاً دار طه وديعه

ووافيت أيضاً دار طه وديعه

محمد المبعوث بالحق والصد

محمد المبعوث بالحق والصد

I also came to the abode of Ṭā Hā and its precious charge—

And I also reached Ṭā Hā's abode, whose entrusted charge is

Muhammad, sent with truth and sincerity—

Muḥammad, sent with truth and repelling [wording unclear].

وعندي أشواق وحزن ولوعة

وعندي أشواق وحزن ولوعة

تزيد مع التذكار وجداً على وجدي

تزيد مع التذكار وجداً على وجدي

while within me were longings, sorrow, and burning anguish,

And I have longings, sorrow, and burning anguish,

which remembrance deepens, adding passion to my passion.

That, with remembrance, add yearning to my yearning.

وقد قعدت بي الناهضات من القوى

وقد قعدت بي الناهضات من القوى

ومن غيرها فاسمع لك الخير ما أبدى

ومن غيرها فاسمع لك الخير ما أبدى

The powers that ought to raise me have instead held me back,

And the powers that once raised me have now failed me,

they and all besides; so hear—may good be yours—what I disclose.

And other things besides; so hear what I disclose—may good be yours.

وكن نائباً عني باهداً تحية

وكن نائباً عني باهداً تحية

معنبرة كالمسك في العرف والند

معنبرة كالمسك في العرف والند

Be my deputy, bearing a greeting

And act as my deputy, [offering?] a greeting

scented with ambergris, like musk and aloeswood in its perfume;

Scented with ambergris, fragrant as musk and incense.

وبل ثرى أرض الحبيب بدمعة

وبل ثرى أرض الحبيب بدمعة

مسلسلة تجري على الخد كالمد

مسلسلة تجري على الخد كالمد

and moisten the beloved's earth with a tear,

And moisten the soil of the beloved's land with a tear

unbroken, flowing down the cheek like a tide,

In an unbroken chain, flowing down the cheek like the tide.

وفي دعوة مسموعة مستجابة

وفي دعوة مسموعة مستجابة

عسى اللَه أن يغسل بها دنس العبد

عسى اللَه أن يغسل بها دنس العبد

and with a prayer that is heard and answered:

And in a prayer heard and answered,

perhaps by it God will wash away His servant's stain,

May God wash away through it the servant's defilement,

ويهديه للحسنى ويختم له بها

ويهديه للحسنى ويختم له بها

وبالعمل المرضي الخالص المجدي

وبالعمل المرضي الخالص المجدي

guide him to the fairest end, and seal his fate with it—

And guide him to goodness, and seal his life with it,

and with knowledge approved, pure, and fruitful.

And with pleasing, sincere, fruitful deeds.

وصلى الإله الحق دأباً وسرمداً

وصلى الإله الحق دأباً وسرمداً

على خاتم الرسل الكرام بلا حد

على خاتم الرسل الكرام بلا حد

May the true God bless, unceasingly and forever,

And may the true God send blessings, unceasingly and forever,

the Seal of the noble Messengers, without end,

Upon the Seal of the noble messengers, without limit,

مع الآل والأصحاب يا رب واجمع ال

مع الآل والأصحاب يا رب واجمع ال

جميع بفضل منك في جنة الخلد

جميع بفضل منك في جنة الخلد

together with his family and Companions. O Lord, gather the—

Together with his family and companions; O Lord, gather

whole company, by grace from You, in the Garden of Eternity.

All of them, through grace from You, in the Garden of Eternity.
