Time has passed, and the days have gone.

So peace be upon the dwellings and the dweller.

Nothing remains but a remnant of our life,

And the tale of longing's sorrows has fallen asleep.

Tell the beloved, wherever you see them:

The love-stricken lover is indeed blamed.

Is one like me to be blamed for loving their like?

Never! My whole being is burning anguish and passion.

And my limbs and my breast enfold

A melting liver, a heart's lifeblood, and sickness.

Their beauty and loveliness have indeed taken me captive,

And their kindness, grace, and beneficence.

How could I turn away and withdraw from their door,

    Where the illustrious masters alight?

Each a learned scholar, penitent and humble,

    Through whom faith and Islam live;

Or a gnostic, firmly grounded and spiritually realized,

With firm footing in spiritual unveiling and piety.

O my friend, if you hear my call,

Then answer and hasten: indeed, your people have fallen asleep.

This age is evil through and through.

Indeed, injustice and darkness have pervaded it.

O Lord, preserve our faith and our livelihood,

And grant us a good end if death should come.

Then blessings be upon the Prophet and his family,

As long as doves warble above the arak trees.
