أبكي على الأحبة

O Saʿd, halt with me at the ruins,

O Saad stop me at the hills

That I may weep for the loved ones,

I cry for the loved ones

ونسكب الدمع كالسيول

ونسكب الدمع كالسيول

من حسرة وكربة

من حسرة وكربة

And we may pour out tears like torrents,

And we spill tears like floods

From sorrow and distress.

Out of sorrow and distress

لهفي على الجيرة النزول

لهفي على الجيرة النزول

بخير كل تربة

بخير كل تربة

How I ache for the neighbors encamped

My craving to descend to the neighborhood

In the finest of all lands!

With the best of every land

لعلها تبرد الكلول

لعلها تبرد الكلول

من حر طول غربة

من حر طول غربة

Perhaps it may cool the weary one

Maybe it will cool the anguish

Worn down by the heat of long exile.

From the heat of a long estrangement

بانوا على الأهل والوطن

بانوا على الأهل والوطن

والربع والمنازل

والربع والمنازل

They departed from family and homeland,

They showed the family, homeland

And the abode and the dwellings;

The quarter and houses

وأوحش الجار والسكن

وأوحش الجار والسكن

والورد والمناهل

والورد والمناهل

And neighbor and home grew desolate,

Made the neighbor and dwelling lonesome

As did the watering place and the water sources.

And the roses and springs

وخلفوني على الدمن

وخلفوني على الدمن

أبكي بدمع سائل

أبكي بدمع سائل

And they left me among the ruined campsites,

Leaving me in the edifice

Weeping with flowing tears.

Crying with a pouring tear

يا غارة اللَه والرسول

يا غارة اللَه والرسول

عسى رضا وقربه

عسى رضا وقربه

O succor of God and the Messenger!

O Allah's and the Messenger's invasion

May there be favor and nearness.

Hopefully satisfaction and proximity

أراك يا ساكن الفؤاد

أراك يا ساكن الفؤاد

تبخل علي بنظره

تبخل علي بنظره

I see you, O dweller in my heart,

I see you, resident of my heart

Withholding a glance from me,

You are stingy to look at me

يحصل بها القصد والمراد

يحصل بها القصد والمراد

والأنس والمسره

والأنس والمسره

Through which aim and desire would be fulfilled,

With it intention and purpose are attained

And intimacy and joy attained;

And delight and pleasure

ويذهب الهجر والبعاد

ويذهب الهجر والبعاد

والبؤس والمضره

والبؤس والمضره

And estrangement and distance would vanish,

And estrangement and remoteness disappear

Along with misery and harm.

And misery and harm

فاسمح لك الخير يا ملول

فاسمح لك الخير يا ملول

واذكر عهود الصحبه

واذكر عهود الصحبه

So be generous—good be yours, O fickle one—

So may goodness befall you my intimate friend

And remember the pledges of companionship,

And recall our companionship

In the days when we were at Dāl Mīm,

When we were instead of the letter meem

In the picturesque valley,

In the painted valley

بجانب السفح من تريم

بجانب السفح من تريم

والعيش غض أخضر

والعيش غض أخضر

Beside the mountain’s foot at Tarim,

Beside the slope of Tarim

While life was fresh and green.

With green thriving livelihood

بسري لنا البرق والنسيم

ممسك معنبر

ممسك معنبر

The lightning and breeze came to us by night,

The lightning and breeze joking with us

Perfumed with musk and ambergris,

Frankincense holder

حيث الأحبة حلول

حيث الأحبة حلول

صربه تؤم صربه

صربه تؤم صربه

Where the loved ones were encamped,

Where the loved ones dwell

One band making for another.

Patience meets patience
