The gazelle of the highlands visited me after estrangement.

    Ambergris-scented, with rose-colored cheeks.

And gave me nectar to drink in the badīd [unclear term].

And through our meeting healed the humble servant's heart.

    I said, “Welcome, O gazelle of al-Raqmatayn!”

You are the delight of my heart, and of my eye as well.

Do not transgress, O gently languid-eyed one.

Thus you honor my covenant and my pledges.

You came to me when the glad tidings came,

With wishes and hopes, O gazelle of ʿĀmir.

How many, how many, are my desires and flute melodies

For you, O one of pearly smiles and necklaces.

O slender bough swaying on a dune,

When the south wind blew toward it.

Return to us; do not fear the watcher's words.

O my joys, when my bough returns!

Ah, may God cherish the nights at the meeting places.

There I attained what I desired [uncertain reading], and more.

Do you think a life once past can then return?

If so—but if not, O eye, pour forth tears.

Indeed, I have far-reaching hopes in God,

And good, beautiful expectations of Him.

I have no means of attaining what I hope for

Other than Ṭā Hā, the Chosen One, the adornment of existence.
