قُصَاركyour utmost aim جَهْلاًin ignorance فيin حيَاةa life قَصيرةٍshort
قُصَارك جَهْلاً في حيَاة قَصيرةٍ
أمانٍhopes طِوالٌlong بِئْسَwretched is مَاwhat تَتَزَوّدُyou take as provisions
أمانٍ طِوالٌ بِئْسَ مَا تَتَزَوّدُ
Your utmost ambition, in ignorance, in a brief life,
Your ignorance lasts briefly in a short life,
Is long hopes—what wretched provisions you take!
Prolonged safety, how little you prepare,
تَجُودgives generously بِمحْياكwith your life اللياليthe nights علىto الرَّدىdeath
تَجُود بِمحْياك الليالي على الرَّدى
وأنْتَand you علىto دُنْياكyour worldly life بالدّينِwith faith أجْوَدُmore generous
وأنْتَ على دُنْياك بالدّينِ أجْوَدُ
The nights lavish your life upon death,
You spend your nights wastefully in frivolity,
While you lavish your faith upon your worldly life more freely still.
Yet with your religion you are most generous.
لَقَدindeed أبْرَقَتْflashed lightning فيهاin it المناياdeaths وأرْعَدَتْand thundered
لَقَد أبْرَقَتْ فيها المنايا وأرْعَدَتْ
وماand not لكَfor you عنْfrom طُولِthe length of الذُّهولheedlessness مُطَرَّدُa way out
وما لكَ عنْ طُولِ الذُّهول مُطَرَّدُ
Indeed, death has flashed its lightning and thundered there,
Death has flashed and thundered in it,
Yet you have no way out of your prolonged heedlessness.
Yet you are not deterred from reckless ignorance,
تَجرّدْstrip yourself مِنَof الدّنياthe world فإنّكfor indeed you إنّماonly
تَجرّدْ مِنَ الدّنيا فإنّك إنّما
خَرجْتَyou came out إلىinto الدُّنياthe world وأنتَwhile you were مُجَرَّدُstripped bare
خَرجْتَ إلى الدُّنيا وأنتَ مُجَرَّدُ
Strip yourself of the world, for you only
Free yourself from this world, for you
Came into the world stripped bare.
Only came into this world bare and free.
