منwho ذاthis one علىthrough الدهرtime مكثremained
من ذا على الدهر مكث
وأيّand which عمرٍlifespan ماnot نكثwas undone
وأيّ عمرٍ ما نكث
Who has ever endured through time?
Who has endured throughout time
And what lifespan has not been undone?
And which life has not wavered?
خانbetrayed الفتىthe young man ماwhat جمعتgathered
خان الفتى ما جمعت
يمناهhis right hand خوفاin fear وحرثand he tilled
يمناه خوفا وحرث
The young man was betrayed by what was gathered
The young man's promises failed
By his right hand in fear, and what he tilled.
His right hand feared and farmed
وحبطتand came to nothing أعمالهhis deeds
وحبطت أعماله
فماyet did not بكىhe wept ولاnor اكترثhe cared
فما بكى ولا اكترث
And his deeds came to nothing,
And his works were ruined
Yet he neither wept nor cared.
Yet he neither wept nor cared
يعبثُhe trifles فيin سفاهةfoolishness
يعبثُ في سفاهة
والمرءand man لمnot يخلقwas created عبثin vain
والمرء لم يخلق عبث
He trifles in foolishness,
He toys with foolishness
Though man was not created in vain.
And man was not created vainly
ياO عامرbuilder of القصرthe palace أماdo you not
يا عامر القصر أما
تأسىyou grieve لإخرابِover the destruction of الجدثthe grave
تأسى لإخرابِ الجدث
O builder of the palace, do you not
Oh inhabitant of the palace, do you not
Grieve over the destruction of the grave?
Grieve for the ruin of ancestry?
كيفhow اغتررتyou were beguiled والردىwhile death
كيف اغتررت والردى
يلفّenfolds كهلاa grown man تجدثhas taken a grave for himself
يلفّ كهلا تجدث
How were you beguiled, while death
How could you be fooled when decay
Enfolds a grown man who has taken his place in a grave?
Envelops the old as they crumble?
