تَسْبِي مُلُوكاً أَوْ تَثُلُّ عُرُوشا
Victories have encircled your court in armies,
Your presence was accompanied by conquering armies
capturing kings or toppling thrones.
That capture kings or demolish thrones

They have lodged in its midst for noon rest and a nightly halt,
And it settled as a place of rest amidst them and dwellings
forever, that you may pare and feather arrows in accord with them.
Forever to grant it success and feathering

They have defied speech in prose and verse,
It exhausted both prose and poetry
so greatly does existence surge with them.
With what existence was fermenting as armies

Their appearance in every age is a sign,
So its emergence in every era is a sign
engraved, while the enemies' markings have faded.
Engraved while the enemies hid engravings

How many a bold warrior or kindler of war has been led
So how many distinguished or vile were led
forcibly to you by his doom, a peg through his nose.
By his pigeons forcefully flocking to you

Like carded wool, scattered by the blowing wind

You are the upheld one among the imams, with a resolve
You are the supported among the imams in resolve
keen as a sharp sword, and a dauntless heart.
Like a hot branding iron and a burning heart

The days found through you what they sought so you did not
burden them with searching or scrutiny.
Inflict them with any burden or investigation

may its firmly laid masonry remain adorned forever.
While the constructed edifice remains engraved

It made enduring, through Yahya al-Murtada, in its glory,
Through al-Murtada, Yahya its pride was affirmed
what had appeared as scratches on the face of time.
What appeared with a cheerful face in times obscure

It made the blind see and made the deaf
even to the deaf man, utterly deaf of ear.
Whose hearing was impaired hear even faint sounds

A king who assumed his throne while the planets are below him
in a dwelling roofed above their spheres.
A house built above their orbits furnished

Good fortune decreed that wishes should preserve for him
Destiny ordained to protect his wishes for him
the wastes of fate, submissive, and gather them in.
Subjugated to fate and timid

It does not fear, though he is blessed, an inauspicious years
a year that licks up vegetation and scorches it.
A year of scarcity for vegetation dry

Between counsels deliberated and a banner,
What is between views revolving and a flag
we find him battle's sworn ally, eager to charge.
We found him a confederate for the casting of lots sincere

He sent the summer campaigns far into the wilderness to draw near,
He distanced the henchmen to the wilderness, approaching
and regarded gaping wounds as scratches.
And saw the desires of the stunted, malformed

Through his good fortunes, the tongue-tied is eloquent by morning,
Through his good fortunes the weeping becomes elated
and through his blessing, the bare arrow shaft is feathered by evening.
And through his blessings the happy becomes feathered

His battalions left the settled lands a barren waste,
His troops left the buildings a ruin
the high ground a hollow, and the mountains crushed grain.
The Najd desolate, and the mountains bare

Composed of men of dreaded mettle, feared for
From every feared despot he is avoided
their onrush, each meeting the armored warrior swift and resolute.
His courage meets the coward like a moth-eaten rag

The sturdy steed's back is his most favored bed;
The horse's soft neck preferred its saddle
he does not prefer the tender, rounded-breasted maiden as bedmate.
It did not prefer the mule's itchy coat a perch

High distinction brought him under war's decree,
The most high brought him to rule over turmoil
lean of body, bitten by its armored warriors' thrusts.
A blow to pierce itsstab of calumny perforated

For its sake he scorns his livelihood and finery;
So none faults his life and feathering
he has grown used to the wilderness, so sees companions as wild beasts.
He who frequented the emptiness sees it inhabited

And if his palm was bent in receiving
it takes the A'waji horse's flowing hair for a hand-wipe.
It assumed the path of the crooked winding

And he traces with the line what the unsteady hand does not claim
by the reed pen beside it, in script or ornament.

God be praised for Hims and its triumph through good fortune,
For God, Hims and its good fortune happily
which guided al-Jazira and Sharish toward it.
Guided Syria towards it and its outskirts

And al-Qasr lent Miknasa its aid there,
The palace assisted it as a street sweeper
so that the depths of its security might overflow and surge.
That its shelter's downpour may surge and flood

It sought the imam of justice, casting off through him
It affirmed the imam of justice abdicating to him
those who fanned the flames and incited strife.
He who corrupted and ruined

And toward him it hastened; wisdom in love is
And the scale inclined in passionate love to him
for the seeker of refuge to make for him and fly.
To make him a refuge and take him under its wing

It called the seat of his dominion the Abode of Peace,
The abode of peace called for the stability of his rule
knowing neither Tunis nor Tarshish.
Not pleasure it knew, or vanity
