To the likeness of the Chosen One's sandal I devote my pure love.

And I deem ceasing to love a sin that will not be forgiven.

And when I clasp it and caress it, kissing

its corners, I do so with honor and reverence.

The secret of my pride in my open self-abasement

before its majesty has left an imprint upon my heart.

If that likeness has stirred my longing, how often

has a phantom stirred a lover's longing, visiting him in sleep!

I find an example in lovers and their seeking

to kiss the ruins, remembering those who dwelt there,

and their weeping over those familiar haunts in bewilderment,

beneath the darkness, wholly devoted to ardent love.

Then shall I not rub my gray hair against it, rightly guided,

and pour out my tears within it, clear-sighted,

confident of being enriched with blessings through

my passionate love for the two sandals of the best who trod the earth?
