إلى أوْطَانِه حَنّ العَمِيدُ
فَظَلّso he remained كَأنّهas though he were غُصْنٌa branch يَمِيدُsways
فَظَلّ كَأنّه غُصْنٌ يَمِيدُ
The love-stricken man yearned for his native lands.
The colonel yearned for his homelands
So he remained like a swaying branch.
He seemed as a bending branch
ومسقطَand the falling-place of رأسهِhis head ذَكَرhe recalled اشْتِياقاًout of longing
ومسقطَ رأسهِ ذَكَر اشْتِياقاً
فَذابَso it melted فُؤادُهُhis heart وهوthough it was الحَديدُiron
فَذابَ فُؤادُهُ وهو الحَديدُ
And, in longing, he recalled his birthplace.
And his birthplace he remembered longingly
So his heart melted, though it was iron.
His heart melted though it was iron

And even if he sought forgetfulness, it would be denied him
Had oblivion tried to make him forget
By familiar haunts whose bygone days were fair.
The pacts of his glorious past would have refused
