ياO قُرَّةَdelight العَيْنِof the eye إنَّindeed العَينَthe eye تَهْوَاكِloves you
فَماfor ... not تَقَرُّfinds peace بِشَيءin anything غيرexcept مَرآكِthe sight of you
O delight of the eye, the eye loves you.
O delight of my eye, truly the eye desires you
For it finds peace in nothing but the sight of you.
So it finds no peace in anything other than seeing you
للَّهِto God (expressing wonder) طرفَيَّmy two eyes أضحاboth have become لاnot يَشُوقُهماmakes them both yearn
إلاexcept سناكِyour radiance وإلاand except طيبَsweetness مغناكِyour abode
Wondrous, by God, are my two eyes; nothing now stirs their longing
By Allah, my glances have become unable to desire
but your radiance and the sweetness of your abode.
Anything but your brilliance and the fragrance of your singing
قَدindeed أخجلَhas shamed الشَّمسَthe sun أنَّthe fact that الشَّمسَthe sun غارِبَةٌsetting
وَمُذand since تَطَلَّعتِyou rose لمhas not يَغْرُبset مُحَيَّاكِyour face
The sun has been shamed by the fact that it sets,
The sun is ashamed that while the sun sets
while, since you rose, your face has never set.
Since you shone forth, your glow has not diminished
لاdo not تَبْرُزيappear لِيَbefore me فيin حَلْيjewelry وَفِيand in حُلَلِfine robes
فالحُسْنfor beauty غشّاكِhas clothed you مَاwhat وشَّىit embroidered وحلاكِand adorned you
Do not appear before me in jewelry and fine robes,
Do not come out to me in jewelry and fine garments
for beauty has clothed you in its embroidery and adorned you.
For beauty has covered you without need for adornment
ياO شُغْلَpreoccupation عَيْنيof my eye إِذاwhen لَمْdo not أخْشَI fear مِنْكِfrom you نَوىًseparation
وَشُغْلَand preoccupation قَلْبِيof my heart إِذاwhen لَمْdo not أرْجُI hope for لُقَيَاكِmeeting you
O you who occupy my eye when I fear no parting from you,
O occupation of my eye when I harbor no ill intentions toward you
and occupy my heart when I have no hope of meeting you.
And preoccupation of my heart when I hope for nothing but to meet you
لاnot تَسْتَطيعُcan حُمَيَّاintoxicating heat الكَرْمof the vine تُسكرنيintoxicate me
وقَدand already تَسَاقَطْتُI collapsed سكْراًin drunkenness مِنْfrom حميّاكِyour intoxicating heat
The vine's intoxicating heat cannot make me drunk,
The wine of generosity can not intoxicate me
for I have already collapsed, drunk on your intoxicating heat.
When I have fallen drunken merely from your fervor
سُمِّيتِyou were named بالحُسنِfor beauty لَمَّاsince أنthat خُصِصْتِyou were specially endowed بهwith it
فَطَابَقَso matched اسمُكِyour name ياO حَسْنَاHasna مُسَمَّاكِyour name's bearer
You were named for beauty, since you were specially endowed with it;
You were named Beauty when you were distinguished by it
so your name, O Hasna, fits its bearer.
So your name suits you, O beautifully named one!
لاmay ... not وَاخَذَhold to account اللَّهGod إلاexcept مَنْwhoever يُعَنِّفُنيrebukes me
عَلَىfor هَوَاكِloving you اعتِداءunjustly وهْوَwhile he يَهْواكِloves you
May God call none to account but whoever rebukes me
None will take you from me but He who would punish me
unjustly for loving you, while he himself loves you.
For my passion, though He Himself inspired desire for you in me
أَخشاكِI fear you غَضْبَىangry كَماjust as أَرْجوكِI hope for you راضِيةًpleased
فكَمْso how often أرَجِّيكِI place my hopes in you ياO هَذيyou there (feminine) وأَخْشاكِand I fear you
I fear you when you are angry, as I hope for you when you are pleased.
I fear your anger as I hope for your pleasure
How often I place my hopes in you, O you there, and fear you!
So how I hope for you, O this one, and fear you!
أبكِيI weep لِبَيْنِكِfor your parting إنْif آبَىrefuses الكَرَىsleep أسَفاًin sorrow
ياO سُوءَgrievousness ماwhat كَلَّفتburdened عَينَيَّmy two eyes عَيْنَاكِyour two eyes
I weep in sorrow for your parting if sleep will not come;
I weep for our separation, should fate refuse
how cruel the burden your eyes have laid on mine!
Oh, how ill-fated are the eyes that gazed upon your eyes!
ماhow أعجبastonishing الدّهرtime يرْجوit hopes أنْto يُنَسِّيَنِيmake me forget
هَوَاكِlove for you جَهلاًignorantly وَلاand not واللَّهِby God أَنْساكِI forget you
How strange is time, hoping to make me forget
How strange is time, hoping to make me forget
my love for you, in its ignorance! No, by God, I shall not forget you.
Your love in ignorance! No, by God, I will not forget you
وكَيفَand how أَنْسَىI forget عُهوداًtimes بالْحِمَىin the protected grounds سَلَفَتْhave passed
لاno صَبْرَpatience ليfor me عِندَat ذِكرَاهاthe memory of them وذِكراكِand the memory of you
And how could I forget bygone times in the protected grounds?
How could I forget covenants made long ago?
I have no patience when I remember them and you.
I have no patience when they and you are remembered

And how many nights we spent in Kazima,
And how many nights we spent concealing
in whispered talk and complaint of what your love-wasted one endures.
Our intimate conversation and lamentations for what distressed you
كَتَمتُI concealed مَسراكِyour night journey فِيهاduring them خَوفَfor fear of عَاذِلَةٍa reproachful woman

I hid your night journey on those nights, fearing a reproachful woman,
I hid your secret then, fearing the slanderer
and a reproachful man; but musk revealed your night journey.
But musk itself broadcast your scent

on those nights; then your two anklets listened to what troubled you.
So it listened to the tale your anklets related

Free gift of favor, so I did not demand your kiss

Secluded, so wonder at one who has become a complainer when he meets you!
