هُوَit is الفَتْحُthe conquest بَعْدَafter الفَتْحِthe conquest يَأتِيcomes مُسَوَّغَاfreely granted
هُوَ الفَتْحُ بَعْدَ الفَتْحِ يَأتِي مُسَوَّغَا
وَماand not وَلَجَتْentered فيinto مَسْمَعٍan ear لُجَّةُthe roaring surge الوَغَىof battle
وَما وَلَجَتْ في مَسْمَعٍ لُجَّةُ الوَغَى
It is conquest after conquest, coming freely granted;
He is the victory after victory that comes justified
and the roaring tide of battle has entered no ear.
No clamor of turmoil has penetrated a hearing
وَلاnor دَلَفَتْadvanced أُسْدُthe lions الهِيَاجof combat لِمِثْلِهاfor its like
وَلا دَلَفَتْ أُسْدُ الهِيَاج لِمِثْلِها
بِأَيْمَانِهاin their right hands مِثْلُlike الأسَاوِدِblack serpents لُدَّغاin biting
بِأَيْمَانِها مِثْلُ الأسَاوِدِ لُدَّغا
Nor have the lions of combat advanced for such a victory,
Nor has the lion of excitement attacked the likes of it
with the likes of biting black serpents in their right hands:
By its oaths, the likes of lions have been stung
رُديْنيَّةٌRudayni spears قَامَتْstood ready لهاfor them بِنيُوبِهَاwith their fangs
رُديْنيَّةٌ قَامَتْ لها بِنيُوبِهَا
لِتُوغِلَهاto plunge them deep ماءَthe water النحُورِof throats وتُولِغَاand make them lap
لِتُوغِلَها ماءَ النحُورِ وتُولِغَا
Rudayni spears, standing ready for them with their fangs,
A she-wolf stood up for it with her fangs
to plunge them deep into the water of throats and make them lap it.
To make its gullets overflow and accomplish
كَأنَّas though الرَّدَىdeath آسٍa physician وهُنَّand they مَبَاضِعٌlancets
كَأنَّ الرَّدَى آسٍ وهُنَّ مَبَاضِعٌ
تُريقُspill دَمَthe blood الباغِينَof the transgressors مَهْمَاwhenever تَبَيَّغاit surges
تُريقُ دَمَ الباغِينَ مَهْمَا تَبَيَّغا
As though Death were a physician and they his lancets,
As if the UN horses and they are spots
spilling the transgressors' blood whenever it surges.
That shed the blood of aggressors no matter how much they feign
أَقَرَّbrought to submission مهيناًabased مَنْwhoever تَخَمَّطَgrew arrogant ضِلَّةًin error
أَقَرَّ مهيناً مَنْ تَخَمَّطَ ضِلَّةً
وَقَرَّand settled علَىinto الإِذْعانِsubmission والهونِand humiliation مَنْwhoever طَغَاtransgressed
وَقَرَّ علَى الإِذْعانِ والهونِ مَنْ طَغَا
It left abased whoever grew arrogant in error,
He settled humiliated whoever wallowed in misguidance
and whoever transgressed settled into submission and humiliation.
And settled on submission and disgrace whoever transgressed
وَمازَالَتْand remained الأَيَّامُthe days حَرْبَاًat war لمَنْagainst whoever بَغَىrebelled
وَمازَالَتْ الأَيَّامُ حَرْبَاً لمَنْ بَغَى
عَليكَagainst you إلَىuntil أَنْthat عَادَhe became سِلْماًpeaceable كَماas انْبَغَىwas fitting
عَليكَ إلَى أَنْ عَادَ سِلْماً كَما انْبَغَى
And the days remained at war with whoever rebelled
And the days continued war for whoever transgressed
against you, until he became peaceable, as was fitting.
Against you until it returned peace as befitting
بِحَسْبِكَenough for you جَدٌّgood fortune صاعِدٌrising يقْهَرsubdues العِدَىthe foes
بِحَسْبِكَ جَدٌّ صاعِدٌ يقْهَر العِدَى
مِنَinstead of الجَيشِthe army جَمَّاعِcombining الصَّهيلِhorse-neighing إلَىwith الرُّغَاcamel-bellowing
مِنَ الجَيشِ جَمَّاعِ الصَّهيلِ إلَى الرُّغَا
Rising fortune that subdues foes suffices you,
Your determination ascending suffices to defeat the enemy
instead of an army joining horse-neighs to camel-bellows.
From the army the neighing horde to the growling
أَلاbehold هَذِهِthese الآفاقُhorizons نَحْوَكَtoward you تَرْتَمِيfling themselves
أَلا هَذِهِ الآفاقُ نَحْوَكَ تَرْتَمِي
لِتُدرِكto attain أَقصَىthe utmost ماwhat تَرُومُthey desire وتَبْلُغَاand reach
لِتُدرِك أَقصَى ما تَرُومُ وتَبْلُغَا
Behold, these horizons fling themselves toward you,
Behold these horizons towards you extend
to attain the utmost of their desire and reach it.
To attain the utmost you seek and achieve
وَماand not تَبْتَغيthey seek إِلاexcept رِضَاكَyour favor ذَخِيرَةًas treasure
وَما تَبْتَغي إِلا رِضَاكَ ذَخِيرَةً
وَهَلْand is غَيْرُهُanything besides it ذُخْراًas treasure يُرَجَّىhoped for ويُبْتَغَىand sought
وَهَلْ غَيْرُهُ ذُخْراً يُرَجَّى ويُبْتَغَى
And they seek no treasure but your favor;
And you desire nothing but your satisfaction as provision
and is anything else hoped for or sought as treasure?
And is there other than it desirable provision that is sought?
فَبِالأَمْسِfor yesterday أَلْقَتْyielded بالمَقَادَةِthe reins سَبْتَةٌCeuta
فَبِالأَمْسِ أَلْقَتْ بالمَقَادَةِ سَبْتَةٌ
فأَوْرَثَهاso he bestowed on her عِدّاًan unfailing spring مِنَof الأَمْنِsecurity سَيِّغاsweet to drink
فأَوْرَثَها عِدّاً مِنَ الأَمْنِ سَيِّغا
For yesterday Ceuta yielded her reins,
So yesterday Sefet threw in Maqadah then
and he bestowed on her an unfailing spring of sweet security;
Inherited it security instead of fear
وَحَطَّتْand set down بكَbeside you اليَومtoday المَريةُAlmería رَحْلَهاher saddle
وَحَطَّتْ بكَ اليَوم المَريةُ رَحْلَها
فَأَقْطَعَهاso he allotted her رَغْداًease مِنَof العَيْشِliving أهْيَغَاabundant
فَأَقْطَعَها رَغْداً مِنَ العَيْشِ أهْيَغَا
and today Almería set down her saddle beside you,
And Mariah dismounted by you today her encampment
and he allotted her abundant ease of living.
So you endowed it prosperity of living instead of misery
لَقَدْindeed قَرَعَتْknocked on لِلفَوْزِfor success باباًa door مُفَتَّحاwide open
لَقَدْ قَرَعَتْ لِلفَوْزِ باباً مُفَتَّحا
وأَمَّتْand sought out إِماماًan imam للنَّجَاةِto deliverance مُبلِّغاbringing one there
وأَمَّتْ إِماماً للنَّجَاةِ مُبلِّغا
Indeed, she knocked, seeking success, on a wide-open door,
She has knocked on the door of victory opened
and sought an imam who brings her to deliverance.
And supplicated a leader of salvation conveying
يُخَافُis feared وَيُرْجَىand hoped in بَيْنَbetween حِلْمٍclemency وبَطْشَةٍand a crushing blow
يُخَافُ وَيُرْجَى بَيْنَ حِلْمٍ وبَطْشَةٍ
أَقامَهُماhe exercised both فِيمَنupon whoever أَطَاعَobeyed وَمنْand whoever بَغَىrebelled
أَقامَهُما فِيمَن أَطَاعَ وَمنْ بَغَى
He inspires fear and hope, poised between clemency and a crushing blow,
He is feared and hoped between forbearance and severity
both of which he applies to those who obey and those who rebel.
He made them straight for whoever obeyed and transgressed
فَكَمْso how many عَادَbecame مُخضَرّاًgreen مِنَof العَيْشِlife أغْبَراdust-gray
فَكَمْ عَادَ مُخضَرّاً مِنَ العَيْشِ أغْبَرا
وكَمْand how many عَادَbecame مُغْبَرّاًdust-gray مِنَof العَيْشِlife أرْفَغاabundant
وكَمْ عَادَ مُغْبَرّاً مِنَ العَيْشِ أرْفَغا
So how many a dust-gray life has turned green,
So how much returned blooming out of living dusty
and how many a life of plenty has turned dust-gray!
And how much returned dusty out of living plush
أقَامَتstraightened صغَاthe leaning الدّينِof the faith الحَنيفِupright صِعَادُهُhis spears
أقَامَت صغَا الدّينِ الحَنيفِ صِعَادُهُ
وَأسْعَدَهُand he aided it حتَّىuntil اسْتَقَلit stood firm بِلاwithout صَغاa lean
وَأسْعَدَهُ حتَّى اسْتَقَل بِلا صَغا
His spears straightened the leaning of the upright faith,
It established the moorings of the religion of Hanif so it triumphed
and he aided it until it stood firm, without a lean.
And brought it success until it dominated effortlessly
هُوَhe is القَمَرُthe moon الوَضَّاحُradiant مَاas long as لاحَhe shines لَمْnot نُبَلْwe care
هُوَ القَمَرُ الوَضَّاحُ مَا لاحَ لَمْ نُبَلْ
بأَنْwhether يأْفلَsets البَدْرُthe full moon الفَياحُfar-shining وَيَبْزُغَاand rises
بأَنْ يأْفلَ البَدْرُ الفَياحُ وَيَبْزُغَا
He is the radiant moon; while he shines, we care not
He is the apparent full moon we have not become old
whether the far-shining full moon sets or rises.
For the shining full moon to set and another to rise
إلَيْهِto him أشارَpointed ابْنُson of الحُسَيْنِal-Husayn بِقَوْلِهِwith his saying
إلَيْهِ أشارَ ابْنُ الحُسَيْنِ بِقَوْلِهِ
عَليمٌversed بأَسْرَارِin the secrets الدِّياناتِof religions واللُّغَاand languages
عَليمٌ بأَسْرَارِ الدِّياناتِ واللُّغَا
Ibn al-Husayn pointed to him in his saying,
He is the one Ibn Al-Hussein pointed to in his words
a man versed in the secrets of religions and tongues:
Knowledgeable of the secrets of religions and languages
أَلاbehold إنَّindeed يَحْيَىYahya المُرْتَضَىal-Murtada عِصْمَةُthe safeguard الوَرَىof humankind
أَلا إنَّ يَحْيَى المُرْتَضَى عِصْمَةُ الوَرَى
بهِthrough him أسْبَلَspread اللَّهُGod الأَمَانsecurity وأَسْبَغاand made it abundant
بهِ أسْبَلَ اللَّهُ الأَمَان وأَسْبَغا
Behold, Yahya al-Murtada is humankind's safeguard;
Behold Yahya the chosen one the protection of all
through him God spread safety and lavished it.
With him Allah draped security and perfected it
تَفَرَّغَdevoted himself للإِحْسَانِto beneficence والعَدْلِand justice والتُّقَىand piety
تَفَرَّغَ للإِحْسَانِ والعَدْلِ والتُّقَى
وَياand oh لهَاfor them أَشْغَالاًoccupations لِمَنْfor one who قَدْhas indeed تَفَرَّغاfreed himself
وَيا لهَا أَشْغَالاً لِمَنْ قَدْ تَفَرَّغا
He devoted himself to beneficence, justice, and piety;
He devoted himself to benevolence, justice and piety
and what occupations these are for one who has freed himself!
And oh what an occupation for one who has devoted
يُبيحُallows انْهِلالاًpouring forth جُودهُhis bounty وتَهَلُّلاand beaming joy
يُبيحُ انْهِلالاً جُودهُ وتَهَلُّلا
وَيحْظُرُand forbids أَنْthat يَأْسَىgrieve المَسِيفُthe destitute ويَنْشَغاand sob
وَيحْظُرُ أَنْ يَأْسَى المَسِيفُ ويَنْشَغا
His bounty lets gifts pour down and faces beam,
His generosity permits outpouring and his happiness overflowing
and forbids the destitute to grieve and sob.
And prohibits that the needy despair and busy themselves
وَماand not يُحْسِنُknows how to الفَرْغانthe two Fargh asterisms صُنْعَthe making صَنَائِعٍof benefactions
وَما يُحْسِنُ الفَرْغان صُنْعَ صَنَائِعٍ
تُرَبare nurtured وإنْand even if صبّاًboth pour مَلِيئاًabundantly وَأَفْرَغاand both empty out
تُرَب وإنْ صبّاً مَلِيئاً وَأَفْرَغا
Nor can the two Farghs fashion benefactions
He is not skilled in the making of makers' making
that are nurtured, though both pour abundantly and empty themselves.
That forms even if a pot filled and poured out
كَفيلٌa guarantor نَدَاهُhis bounty المُسْتَهِلُّpouring وبَأْسُهُand his valor
كَفيلٌ نَدَاهُ المُسْتَهِلُّ وبَأْسُهُ
بأَنْthat يَشْعُرَcompose poetry السِّكِّيتُthe silent man فيهِabout him ويَنْبُغَاand excel
بأَنْ يَشْعُرَ السِّكِّيتُ فيهِ ويَنْبُغَا
His pouring bounty and his valor guarantee
His aid called by the asker and his might
that the silent man will compose verse about him and excel.
That the lion feel him and yearn
تَخِيمُrecoil الأُسودُthe lions الغُلْبُthick-necked عنهُfrom him مَهَابَةًin awe
تَخِيمُ الأُسودُ الغُلْبُ عنهُ مَهَابَةً
فَمَاso not الثَّعلبُthe fox الرَّوَّاغُever-dodging مِنْهاthan they بأَرْوَغَاany more evasive
فَمَا الثَّعلبُ الرَّوَّاغُ مِنْها بأَرْوَغَا
The thick-necked lions recoil from him in awe,
The black lions shroud overwhelming awe from him
so the dodging fox is no more evasive than they.
So the sly fox with him is not slippery
وتُبْدِيand displays لَهُto him العَلْياءُlofty glory هزَّةَa sway مِعْطَفٍof a flank
وتُبْدِي لَهُ العَلْياءُ هزَّةَ مِعْطَفٍ
بِماbecause of how هَزَّhe shook فيwithin الذَّمْرِthe brave warrior القَنَاةَthe spear وشَغْشَغَاand worked it back and forth
بِما هَزَّ في الذَّمْرِ القَنَاةَ وشَغْشَغَا
And high glory shows him a sway of her flank,
And the lofty show him the fluttering of a cloak's hem
for he shook his spear within the brave warrior and worked it back and forth.
With what fluttered the flesh of the skinny and jiggled
يُلاقِيهِhe meets him لَبَّاساًheavily clad مِنَin السَّرْدِchainmail أَزْرَقاًblue
يُلاقِيهِ لَبَّاساً مِنَ السَّرْدِ أَزْرَقاً
فَيَثْنيهِthen turns him back مِنْwith قَانِيthe deep crimson الدِّماءof blood مُصبَّغاdyed
فَيَثْنيهِ مِنْ قَانِي الدِّماء مُصبَّغا
He meets him clad in blue chainmail,
Wearing against him a coat of mail of blue iron
then turns him back dyed with blood's deep crimson.
So he bends it with the blood of the slain dyed
بِهِthrough him دَفعrepelled الحَقُّtruth الضَّلالَerror وهَاضَهُand crushed it
بِهِ دَفع الحَقُّ الضَّلالَ وهَاضَهُ
فَلوْلاهُso without him ماnot كانَwould be الضَّلالُerror لِيُدْمَغَاever crushed
فَلوْلاهُ ما كانَ الضَّلالُ لِيُدْمَغَا
Through him Truth repelled error and crushed it;
With him the truth repelled falsehood and erased it
without him, error could never have been struck down.
Else without him falsehood would not have been erased
أطَلَّappeared علَىover الدُّنياthe world هُداهُhis guidance وَقدْwhile already غَدَتْwent forth at dawn
أطَلَّ علَى الدُّنيا هُداهُ وَقدْ غَدَتْ
ورَاحَتْand went at dusk شَيَاطِينُthe devils الغَوايَةof error نُزَّغَاinciting discord
ورَاحَتْ شَيَاطِينُ الغَوايَة نُزَّغَا
His guidance shone upon the world, while at dawn
His guidance emerged while the world had gone
and dusk the devils of error went stirring discord.
And the devils of misguidance crept away
فَأَتْبَعَهاso he sent after them شُهْباًmeteors ثَوَاقِبَpiercing لِلقَنَىof the spears
فَأَتْبَعَها شُهْباً ثَوَاقِبَ لِلقَنَى
تُحَرِّقُهاburning them حتَّىuntil فَشَاit spread وتَفَشَّغَاand grew widespread
تُحَرِّقُها حتَّى فَشَا وتَفَشَّغَا
So he sent after them the spears' piercing meteors,
So he followed them with meteors to the rebel
burning them until his guidance spread and flourished.
Burning them until it spread and ignited
وَلَمَّand gathered الوَرَىhumankind شَمْلاًinto unity وَكانواand they were كَأَنَّماas though
وَلَمَّ الوَرَى شَمْلاً وَكانوا كَأَنَّما
رَغَاbellowed وسطَهمْamong them سَقْبُthe camel-calf السَّماءِof the sky وَماyet not رَغَاit bellowed
رَغَا وسطَهمْ سَقْبُ السَّماءِ وَما رَغَا
And he gathered humankind into unity; they had been as though
And he united the people while they were as if
the sky's camel-calf had bellowed among them—yet it had not.
The sky's canopy rumbled and did not rumble over them
فإِنso if غادَرَhe left التَّجْسيمَcorporealism شلْواًa carcass مُمَزَّعاًtorn to pieces
فإِن غادَرَ التَّجْسيمَ شلْواً مُمَزَّعاً
فَقَدْthen indeed صانَhe safeguarded للتَّوحيدِfor divine unity وَجْهاًa face مُمَرَّغَاrubbed in dust
فَقَدْ صانَ للتَّوحيدِ وَجْهاً مُمَرَّغَا
So if he left corporealism a shredded carcass,
So if he left incarnation paralyzed fragmented
he has surely safeguarded the dust-smeared face of divine unity.
He protected the oneness of a face wiped
