فديتك ما هذا التراخي وإنّما

عدادُك لو يصحو فؤادك في السفر

عدادُك لو يصحو فؤادك في السفر

I would ransom you! What is this lingering? You are only

My dearest friend, why this lack of care when

numbered among travelers, if your heart would awaken.

If your heart would but awaken to wisdom on this journey

تنَزّه عن التطواف تلتمسِ الغنى

تنَزّه عن التطواف تلتمسِ الغنى

حسبك بالنزرِ اليسيرِ من الوفر

حسبك بالنزرِ اليسيرِ من الوفر

Shun roaming about, and seek self-sufficiency;

You’d refrain from idle wandering, seeking riches

a scant, modest share of wealth is enough for you.

A little wealth should suffice for your needs

ومن أمّ دفرٍ حذّرَ الناس قبلنا

ومن أمّ دفرٍ حذّرَ الناس قبلنا

فإيّاكَ والتعريج منها على دفر

فإيّاكَ والتعريج منها على دفر

And people before us were warned against Umm Dafr, Mother of Stench;

Many before warned against the treacherous path

so beware of turning aside toward her stench.

So beware of venturing there in your greed

هب العمر يحظى بالعمارة آملاً

هب العمر يحظى بالعمارة آملاً

أليس من القبر المآلُ إلى القفر

أليس من القبر المآلُ إلى القفر

Suppose life enjoys settled prosperity, full of hope—

Make the most of life while you’re able

is not the final passage from the grave into the wilderness?

For all journeys end at the grave’s door

ألم ترَ وفد اللَه من بعد حجّهم

ألم ترَ وفد اللَه من بعد حجّهم

إذا لهجوا بالقرّ سيقوا إلى النفر

إذا لهجوا بالقرّ سيقوا إلى النفر

Have you not seen how God's pilgrims, after their pilgrimage,

Have you not seen the pilgrims when Hajj is done

when they spoke eagerly of rest, were driven to depart?

Crying “To die!” they march on without fear
