وبع طلب الرضى بالرشد غيّا

I counsel you: do not sell right guidance for error;

I have counseled you: do not sell right guidance for error.

instead, sell the error of seeking gratification in exchange for guidance.

And sell error for right guidance, seeking approval.

وليّ الشيب بالإقلاع ظلمٌ

وليّ الشيب بالإقلاع ظلمٌ

فكم ذا تتبعُ التسويف ليّا

فكم ذا تتبعُ التسويف ليّا

To keep gray hair waiting for your renunciation is a wrong—

And to deny gray hair its due of repentance is wrong.

how long will you pursue procrastination, ever stalling?

So how long will you add delay to procrastination?

ألم تر ما يسوم الناس نشراً

ألم تر ما يسوم الناس نشراً

من الآمال كيف يغالُ طيّا

من الآمال كيف يغالُ طيّا

Have you not seen what drives people onward when unfurled—

Have you not seen what people offer, spread wide,

their hopes—and how suddenly it is seized and folded away?

Of hopes—how it is snatched away and folded up?

إذا فاء الفتى لنهاه يوماً

إذا فاء الفتى لنهاه يوماً

رأى الأعمار للآجال فيّا

رأى الأعمار للآجال فيّا

If one day a young man returns to his good sense,

When a young man returns one day to his senses,

he sees lifetimes as shadows cast by their appointed ends.

يبيد الخلق من شيخ وشرخٍ

وهل ترك الردى في الحي حيّا

All creatures perish, aged and young alike;

And has death left anyone in the tribe alive?

محت قيساً وليلاهُ الليالي

محت قيساً وليلاهُ الليالي

وغال الموت غيلاناً وميّا

The nights erased Qays—and his Layla;

and death carried off Ghaylan—and Mayya.

And death snatched away Ghaylan and Mayy.

مرامُ الفوز في دنياك دانٍ

بما ترجوه من ريّ وريّا

بما ترجوه من ريّ وريّا

The goal of triumph in your worldly life lies near,

The success you seek in your world is close at hand,

through the quenching and fragrance for which you hope.

With the quenching of thirst and sweet fragrance you hope for.

وخير الزاد تقوى اللّه حقا

وخير الزاد تقوى اللّه حقا

فلا تعدل بتقوى اللّه شيّا

فلا تعدل بتقوى اللّه شيّا

The finest provision is reverence for God—truly;

And the best provision is truly reverence for God;

so set nothing on a par with reverence for God.

So do not set anything equal to reverence for God.
