How wondrous that bygone time at al-Rusafa,
God has a covenant with sincerity from long ago
Portraying youth in its prime.
It describes youth while in its prime

It would have left a burning ache in my heart, had not
My heart would hold a burning anguish, if not

Watered with what melted from its fires
ياO شَوقَlonging أَحْداقِيmy eyes هَفَتْfluttered longingly لِحَدائِقٍtoward gardens

Ah, my eyes' longing—they fluttered toward gardens,
O longing of my eyes that yearned for gardens
Whose streams flow into their pools,
Whose streams flow to its valleys
كَالأُمَّهاتِlike mothers أَوَتْreturned إِلَىto أَطْفَالِهاtheir children

Like mothers who returned to their children,
Like mothers who incline towards their children
Then cast sustenance upon them from their shirts.
Bestowing on them sustenance from their shirts
