Glad tidings to the western delegation, the choicest of Arabs:
Welcome to the delegation from the West, the elite of the Arabs
an arrival in eager hope, bringing refuge from terror.
An arrival dispelling fright and providing safe haven
وهَصْرٌand bending down لأفنانِof the boughs of الأمانيhopes أفادَهُمbrought them
أفانينَvaried forms of حصْبِshowers of الجُودِgenerosity بالرَّفْهِwith ease والخِصْبِand abundance
And bending down the boughs of their hopes brought them
Quenching the thirst of yearning souls with generosity and bounty
varied showers of generosity, with ease and abundance.
Did you not see them overflowing with fresh bounty
ألمdid ... not? تَرهُمyou see them أفضواmake their way إلىto فائضthe overflowing giver of النّدىbounty
فلقّاهُمُso he greeted them بالنائِلwith gifts الرّحبample والرّحْبِand welcome
Did you not see them reach the giver of overflowing bounty,
And welcoming them with spacious and ample gifts
who greeted them with ample gifts and welcome?
You see nothing but youthful vigor adorning their vigor
وَقَلّدهمand girded them لَمّاwhen كَساهُمhe clothed them فَلاso not تَرىyou see

And when he clothed them, he girded them with swords; you see
The minds of rationalists wander lost in fascination
only keen blades adorned with gold over patterned robes.
It is enough that the clouds pour down ample rain
تَحارُare bewildered عُقُولُthe minds of المعْقِلِيّينَthe Ma‘qilians فيat لُهىًgifts
كَفىspared السّحْبdrawing منfrom فَضْفاضِهاtheir ample bounty نُجْعةseeking pasture السحبِthe rain clouds
The minds of the Ma‘qilians are bewildered at gifts,
By their life, did they gain the like of this before
drawing from whose ample bounty spared them roaming after rain clouds.
When life was found between hardship and want
بِعَيْشِهِمُby their lives هلhad ...? أحْرَزواthey gained قَبْلbefore مِثْلَهاits like

By their lives, had they ever won the like of these before,
The greatest benefit being guidance towards guidance
when livelihood roamed between dry dates and camel calves?
Though it nurtures according to the number of motes of dust
وأنْفَسُand more precious مِنهاthan them ماwhat أُفيدَwas received منof الهُدىguidance

وإنand even though جَعَلَتْthey began تُربيto increase عَلَىbeyond عَددِthe number of التُّرْبِdust grains
And more precious than these is the guidance they received,
Whether the new moons have appeared or the old disappeared
though the gifts grew to outnumber grains of dust.
For God is a people who accepted the rift with amiability
أَماhas not? انْجَلَتِcleared الجُلّىthe great calamity أماhas not? التَأمhealed الثأىthe rupture

Has not the great calamity cleared? Has not the rupture healed?
Sincerity drew near to them while the abode was strange
Praise God for a people who met a rift with mending!
So their esteem rose above the heads of the esteemed
دَناdrew near بِهمwith them الإخْلاصُsincerity والدارand the dwelling غُرْبَةٌexile
فكعْبُهمso their heel يَعلوrises above رُؤوسَthe heads of بنيthe sons of كَعْبِKa‘b
Sincerity brought them near, though their dwelling was far away;
They are a caravan whom hardship avoided guiding them
so their heel rises above the heads of the sons of Ka‘b.
From pursuing harm and walking into pits
هُمُthey الرّكْبُthe caravan حادturned aside الكْربdistress عَنهمfrom them محيدَهمas they turned aside

They are the caravan: distress turned aside from them as they turned aside
Cyclical, when the atmosphere was somber they shone
from racing in haste and trotting in guile.
Their comfort revolves from crescent to celestial pole
بُدوراًas full moons إِذاwhen ماever قطّبfrowned الجَوُّthe sky أشرَقواthey shone

Full moons—whenever the sky frowns, they shine;
Their inclination proves the truth of their aspirations
their mill turns upon a pivot from Hilal.
And their determination foretells the gazelles will return
إنابَتُهُمtheir devoted return تَقضيattests بِصِدْقِto the sincerity of منابهمtheir turning back

Their devoted return attests the sincerity of their turning back,
Guidance led them to the guiding Imam, fortunate
and their resolve proclaims that sword-edges will drive back the foe.
Shepherding them to bestowal and herd
هَدَتْهُمled them إِلىto الهادِيthe guiding الإمامimam سعادَةٌgood fortune

تؤُمُهمleads them بالسّرْبِto the herds يوهِبhe bestows والسّرْبِand flocks
Good fortune led them to the guiding imam,
Teaching them that dawn's radiance is not like the deceptive mirage
leading them to the herds and flocks he bestows.
Nor fleeting fair ones like the winged steadfastness
وتُعلمُهمand teaches them أنthat ليسis not كَالْغَيْهَبlike pitch darkness الضُّحىdaylight

And it teaches them that daylight is not like pitch darkness,
Whoever intends to vitalize a shrine for his circumambulation
nor sleek coursers like exhausted, mangy beasts.
