أُسَلِّمُI submit لِلْمَقدورِto what is decreed ثُمَّthen أسَلِّمُI bid farewell
ويَظْعَنُand departs جُثْمانِيmy body وقَلْبيwhile my heart مُخَيِّمُremains encamped
I submit to fate, then bid farewell.
My body departs, while my heart remains encamped.

غَرَامٌpassionate love صُراحٌunalloyed واعْتِزامٌand resolve مُصَمِّمُunwavering
Two bitter forces pull it apart—marvel, you two:
unalloyed passion and unwavering resolve.
بِعَيْشِكُماby the lives of you two لاdo not تُثْقِلاهُburden it, you two مَلامَةًwith blame

By your lives, you two, do not burden it with blame;
it did not hasten away until it had lingered long.
وَلاand do not تُوئِسَاهُmake it despair, you two مِنْof نَجَاحِfulfillment رَجائِهِits hope

Nor make it despair of its hope's fulfillment;
for time has a smile after its frown.
وَإنَّand indeed لَهُit has بالنَّاصِرِيَّةِat al-Nasiriyya نَاصِراًa champion

Indeed, it has a champion at al-Nasiriyya,
who routs misery's army, vast though it is.
وَتَمضِيand go forth كَماas تَمْضِيgo forth السُّيوفُthe swords سُيوبُهُhis gifts

And his gifts go forth as swords go forth,
so calamities recoil from him and draw back.
بِرَغْمِيَagainst my will أزْمَعْتُI resolved المَسِيرَto journey عَنِaway from العُلَىeminence
وَصَرْفُand the vicissitudes of اللياليthe nights لِلْمُحِبيِّنَto lovers مُرْغِمُcompelling
Against my will I resolved to journey away from eminence,
and the turns of the nights compel lovers.
فَماfor none حَسَدَenvied التَّبْريحَtorment إلاexcept تَلَهُّفٌanguished longing
وَلاand none غَبَطَcoveted التَّوْديعَfarewell إِلاexcept تَنَدُّمُregret
Only anguished longing has envied torment,
and only regret has coveted farewell.
دَعانِيsummoned me لِتَرْحاليto my departure اضْطِرارٌnecessity وَلَمْand has not يَزَلْceased

Necessity summoned me to depart, and has always
made lawful what has become forbidden to a man.

Were it not for little children whom their hunger has wasted,
so that at most, skin and bones remain—

فَمَاfor none مِنْهُمْamong them إلاbut يَتِيمٌan orphan وَأَيِّمُand a widow
their mother visited them as a solace amid sorrow;
for among them are only orphans and a widow.
هُمُthey أبَداًalways هَمِّيmy concern فَلَيْلِيso my night ألْيلٌdarker still

They are always my care; my night is darker still
through my inability to help them, and my day more grievous.

Their breasts blaze with flame and burn fiercely,
and their eyes rain fresh blood and stream.

You would think them, in their grief and sobbing,
doves singing upon their boughs.
وَزَجَّيْتُand I eked out أيَّاميmy days وَرَجَّيتُand hoped for فُرْجَةًrelief

I eked out my days and hoped for relief,
while no night-ridden mount or bridled steed had yet carried my baggage.
كَفانِيsufficed me الرّضىapproval والإذْنُand permission زاداًas provisions لِطيَّتِيfor my journey

Approval and permission sufficed as provisions for my journey;
wherever I am, they are my sustenance and my gain.

How often, in the seat of the caliphate—may it be strengthened—I sought
a settled abode, in vain; gifts are arrows.
وكَمْand how often لُحْتُI appeared مَصْدُوداًrebuffed يُلَوِّحُنِيscorching me الصَّدىthirst

How often I appeared rebuffed, with thirst scorching me,
while the sea of its bounty was vast, its waves foaming.
فَإِنْso if آنَit is time ليfor me مِنْfrom بَعْدafterward فيهاin it تَأَخُّرٌfalling behind

If now it is my time to fall behind there,
I did enjoy precedence there before.

Yet my journeying is from it back to itself,
so that a closed door to earning a livelihood may be opened.

Is not the heir apparent my qibla, toward which
I turn my face and set my course?

Perhaps my hopes have called me to a change of fortune;
then surely I am called by an endearingly shortened name.

And enough for me is favor from the gracious king;
I have always lived at ease amid his manifold favors.

A letter assuring safety from grave misfortune,
and a parchment conveying gracious intent.

O imam of guidance, grant kindness, mercy, and tenderness;
for masters' way is to be tender and show mercy.

At my arrival, your regard bound me to you;
will it, at my departure—far be it, far be it—sever ties?

Deep-rooted glory and eminence have decreed
that whoever hopes for your bounty is given his choice.

My hope in you is a certainty, fully assured;
but in all other kings, it is conjectural belief.

everlasting, whose perfume the garden breathes forth.

is devoted to thanking you or enthralled by love for you.
