أملُ الفتى وردُ الزلال السائغُ

هلّا تفكّرَ في أفول البازغ

A young man’s hope is a draught of pure water, sweet to swallow.

The youth's hope is to drink clear, palatable water.

If only he would ponder the setting of what shines forth.

Why has he not pondered the setting of what rises?

لو كان ينصف لم ينازع أنّه

للعيّ والإجبال فكر النابغ

للعيّ والإجبال فكر النابغ

Were he fair, he would not dispute that

If he were fair, he would not dispute that

even a brilliant mind may be struck speechless and stumped.

يا من يزيغ ولا يزين خلاله

بالرشد ليس المستقيم بزائغِ

O you who stray, yet do not adorn your character

with right guidance—the upright do not go astray.

Devote yourself to girding up for effort in the dark of night,
