أمَاis there not بَعْدafter عَتْبthe reproach of العامِرِيّةthe ʿĀmirī woman مِنany عُتْبىreconciliation
لقدindeed قَطَعَتْshe has cut off حتّىeven الوَلائِدَthe maidservants وَالكُتْباand the letters
Is there no reconciliation after the ʿĀmirī woman's reproach?
She has cut off even the maidservants and the letters.
إِذاwhen زُرْتهاI visit her لاقيتُI encounter حجباbarriers مِنof القَناthe spears
وبيضand gleaming الظُّبىblade-edges تحميguard البَراقِعthe face-veils والحجباand the curtains
When I visit her, I meet barriers of spears,
and gleaming blades guard the face-veils and curtains.
فأَرْجعso I return أدراجيalong my own tracks وَلَوْthough if شِئتُI wished خاضwould plunge through بيbearing me
لقُبّتهاto her tent طرْفيmy steed جنابَتُهاat her side القَبّاthe lean steeds
So I retrace my steps; yet, if I wished, I would be borne
to her tent by my steed, through the lean horses at her side.
وماand not ذاكthat جُبْناًcowardice بلbut حيَاءًmodesty وَعِفّةًand chastity
مِنbefore الحيّthe clan أنlest يدْرُواthey learn بمَنof whom شفّنيhas wasted me حُبّاwith love
And that is not cowardice, but modesty and chastity,
before the clan, lest they learn whose love has wasted me.
لَهَاfor her اللّهُGod لِمْwhy ضَنّتْshe was stingy عَلَيّtoward me بِوَصْلِهاwith her closeness
وَلِمand why حَرمَتنيhas she denied me القرْبَnearness دونَshort of ذرَىthe heights of القرْبىkinship
God bless her! Why has she begrudged me union with her,
and why denied me nearness, short of kinship's heights?
وَماand what ضَرّهاhas harmed her أنّيthat I am يَمانٍYemeni وأنّهاand that she is
لِقَيْسٍof Qays ألسْناare we not فيin تعارُفِناour mutual recognition عُرْباArabs
And what harm has it done her that I am Yemeni, while she
is of Qays? Do we not recognize one another as Arabs?
تَذودshe wards off عنfrom الثّغْرthe mouth الشّنيبِcool and sweet بِلَحْظِهاwith her glance
فياso, oh مَنwho رأىhas seen عضْبkeen الظباthe blade-edges يحرُسُguarding العَذباsweetness
She guards her cool, sweet mouth with her glance;
so who has ever seen a keen-edged sword guarding sweetness?
بِعَادٌestrangement وإِعراضٌand aversion عَلَيّupon me تَعَاقَباhave alternated
فياso, O فَاتِنيmy enchanter بالحُسْنِwith beauty حسّنْmake fair ليّfor me العُقبىthe outcome
Estrangement and aversion have beset me in turn;
so, you who bewitch me with beauty, make my outcome fair.
إذاif كانis إسعاديmaking me happy لِسُعدىto Suʿdā مُنافِراًrepugnant
فماذاthen what عسىmight يُؤثرُhave an effect بيon me با[unclear fragment]
If making me happy is repugnant to Suʿdā,
then what effect might [unclear] have on me?
وللّهِand to God ذاتthe wearer of القلْبthe bracelet والحَجْلand the anklet كُلّماwhenever
أحَاولُI try أنthat تَرْضَىshe be pleased تَطلعُshe appears ليbefore me غَضْبىangry
And God bless the wearer of bracelet and anklet! Whenever
I try to win her favor, she appears before me angry.
