لاlet not يَضَعْlower مِنِّيmy standing لَوْنِيmy color عِنْدكُمin your eyes
رُبّmany a لَيْلnight فَضَلَsurpassed اليَوْمَthe day وزاداand exceeded it
Let not my color lower me in your eyes.
Many a night has surpassed the day, and more.
شَعُرsensed الشَّعْرthe hair بِكِتْمانيof my concealing الهَوىlove
فَدَعانيso it summoned me دُونَrather than أَضْدادِيmy opposites ونادَىand called aloud
The hair sensed my concealment of love,
so it summoned me, not my opposites, and called aloud.
وَلُزوميand my keeping to الفَرْعَthe tresses (literally, the branch) وفَّىperfected أدَبيmy courtesy
فَخُذواso take عَنِّيfrom me أَصْلاًa principle (a root) مُستَفاداto be learned
And my keeping to the tresses perfected my courtesy;
so take from me a principle worth learning.
صِبْغُthe color ماwhat أخدُمهُI serve it منof صِبغَتيmy coloring
فلِهَذاso for this reason ماthat (nominalizing) تَخَيْرتI chose السَّواداblack
The color of what I serve matches my own;
so this is why I chose black.
